Something doesn't seem right about being able to have a ship name that everyone can see for little one-man starfighters. The big capital ships, of course. medium-sized independently-owned ships, sure, why not? But I'm pretty sure TIE fighters are considered property of the empire, and don't really *belong* to their pilots. So I doubt they're going to let you just paint "The Tropical Escape" or something on the side of it's hull. Even Darth Vader's TIE didn't have a name. A possible issue of confusion are designations like "Rogue Nine" and "Black Two" which are not actual ship names, but just (temporary) squadron designations so everybody knows who's talking to whom. Rebellion X-Wings I might be able to see, especially if it was owned by the pilot, like Corran Horn's in one of the X-Wing books, but most of the Rebel's X-Wings were considered property of the rebellion, and I don't even think Corran Horn named his ship. I don't know the exact reasoning behind it, but I think it's kind of an unspoken rule that small ships like that just don't get named. Big commercial cruiseliners are named, sure. But would you name your frickin' canoe, even if you could?

On the other side of the coin though i can see large Factional PA's breaking down groups into fighter squads and name the ships accordingly i.e. "Red 5"

I'm kind of torn...I guess for fighters, it should just say the name of the pilot, the ship in the ground game should just say "a TIE Fighter". And when you group the ships should be designated such as "Green 7" or "Alpha 1".

I actually think it would be better to have only ship names appear instead of the pilots names. Adds more of a mystery. People wondering who the heck just vaped me. Course then you would have the griefers using this as cover for actions, but CSR's should have no problem figuring out who was flying.

I like the naming idea...with 15 ships identification shouldnt be a problem and as someone planning on being neutral I'd hate to fall under some required naming rule. And as someone mentioned guild groups and the like would have a much easier time organizing that way...

In my guild which is One Eighty First Elite Tie Wing on intrepid im going to have 6 squadrons all with different names, i will just assign the pilots numbers in that squadron, for example saber squadron, there will be saber 1, saber 2, saber 3 and so on.

I like the idea of being able to name your ship. Seems more customizable.
