Thread: Concept for space control.

Let me say I don't knock the current interface, however, unless you have a low ping to SWG, you'll be unable to participate in space. Having the user doing all the target aligning, firing, dodging, etc. is great as long the communications can keep up. I'm sure that I'm part of the minority group here, but space venturing could be opened up to all players if combat could be altered from user controlled to AI controlled, based upon ship loadout, experience, etc. As it is now, I cannot use the JTLS expansion at all, short of travel as my ship does no damage to enemy ships (despite showing hits on my end) as the sync is so far out that the targets are no longer in space on the server where they show on my screen, basically hits that show on my video do not register as hits on the server.

Perhaps another method can be derived to resolve this. I live well outside the city, so services like DSL are unavailable to me and my high speed satellite connection has a ping ranging from 1k-3k on average. For those who suggest the idea of moving closer to the city, slap yourself.

Umm, a resounding NO!if I'm reading your post correctly. JTL is a twitch based game, where player skill matters more than template or uber weapons. That makes it somewhat unique in the world of MMOGs. You're proposing a completely different type of game.

Sorry if you can't get a good connection where you live, but that's life on the internet. Have you tried a dial up service? You may recieve a much lower ping than you do with satellite. Barring that, check out EVE Online, as it sounds like what you're describing. Space combat is all run by the AI based on your ship and skills, with the pilot making minor equipment choices.

No ground auto-aim stupidity. Twitch-based flying is what makes JtL fun.

Hmm, and turn down the graphics and such so people on a Pentium I with 64mb RAM can play the game too?

A good ping is a system requirement for all twitch based onlinegames. Do you post at Epic to redo their Unreal engine so you can play unreal too?

I'm sorry you're living somewhere without a lot of connection options atm. But connection technology is moving fast these days.

No no and HELL no... It is bad enough they have the AI do the ground combat. THat is what keeps a decent game from being an AWESOME game...

I love JTL. LOVE it, and one of the main reasons for that is that it is ME flying my ship, not the computer. When I'm on the ground and the giant lizard falls over dead, I hardly even care, its all game mechanics. On the ground someone compliments my shooting, I smile and nod, but it's not really a compliment. I'm not doing anything but hitting a few buttons and waiting for the target to die. Big deal.

But in space....in space I am proud of ever scrap of skill I gain, I'm thrilled with every new feat I accomplish. Yesterday a pilot my crew and I helped called us professionals, and the whole lot of us were touched. A friend complimented me by saying I 'turned and burned' in my YT 'like it's a fighter', and I actually blushed. Because it was ME and my skills that were being praised, not some AI.

Anyone can beanother button mashing monkey.

Iam a pilot.

Hmm, I don't think that will work Mahrmahduke. That would ruin, imo, the feel of JTL and change the very basics of how the game plays. What i would suggest is learning to lead your targets so that it looks like you are firing in front of them. I know I wouldn't like not seeing the hits register on my end but your solution is asking too much.

I can remember FPS games like quake, Doom, Duke Nukem, and many other on a modem and in order to compete I needed to lead my targets so that on my end it looked like I was firing in front of them and missing them.

And more recently this was something very common in BF1942 even with high speed connections it was easy to find servers with lots of ppl that had a noticeable delay between my actions and the ones on the server. I had to lead targets and fire at air in front of them. Especially with sniper rifles, that was really tough, learning how to judge net lag by leading your shots takes some practice but you can do it.

First of all, I agree 100% with the resounding "No!"'s. Second, get dial-up. Satallite internet is notoriously slow for uploading data - worse then dial-up, in fact. When I started JTL I was living in Europe and playing on an American server via dial-up and I rarely had any problems. My ping was a solid 300-400 and the game was impressively playable. In fact, when I started playing on high-speed internet back in the states I hardly noticed any difference.

You can get hooked up with dial-up internet for less then $10 a month these days, which is probably much cheaper then your stallite connection. You'll lose the fast download speeds but JTL will be playable for you.

Also, the internet and gaming are not egalitarian past-times. There is a barrier for entry. Again, when I was living overseas and playing on dial-up I understood that I could not play my favorite MP FPS games. It was annoying, but I accepted the situation with the knowledge that I would, in future, have access to high-speed internet and would then be able to enjoy those games.

Yep, used to be an EVE player, very familar with that game which played very well on my old dial-up service. I started playing SWG on dial-up but actually had poorer service than with the satellite connection, which definately has its latency issues.

As I expected, I was very much in the minority with this view but had to ask. Maybe I'll have DSL available within 10 years in my area. Thanks to those with constructive comments.
