After reading about it, space mining actually sounds surprisingly fun.
Can't wait to do the quest... I want a Y-8 bad. That thing looks awsome.

A great use for milti ships and other heavy ships as well like the Y-wing. Put a mining laster in the chin gun and a tractor beam in the turret. It would make a great personal miner with all that mass. Other high mass ships that don't get used for much would make great miners. The Y-8 would make a great foundation for a space PA. The crew of the mining vessle and a few escort fighter pilots. Looks like they nailed the interior. This could almost be called the first step to player based capitol ships.

From the looks of the interior shots, The V-8 is one colossal vessel!
Mining seems to be a great idea,I wonder if players and actually become the pirates

From what I've seen, that little top compatment thing there, the bridge and the are behind it,is as long as the yacht, possibly longer. And taller. Which somewhat conflicts with Garva's stats that state it's only 110 m long and the yacht is 90. The thing looks closer to 200-250. Which would put it at something like 300-350 m tall.
It essentially IS a capital ship. I just wish it had 4 turrets instead of 2.

But I'll bet it pops like a zit in PvP just like my poor YT. We'll see. The idea that these minerals can be traded between stations is somewhat interesting. I wonder if pricing is dynamic? If pricing changes depending on how much ore's been sold and ore itself is randomly available in different areas, like surface respawns for resources, we might have something that looks likean economic game in space. But I'm not so sure...sounds almost like prices will be fixed at stations and resources will always spawn in the same zones. Takes the game out of it a wee bit. And I've played enough Freelancer that I know breaking big rocks into small rocks isn't quite as entertaining as it sounds. Oh, it didn't sound entertaining? My bad.
Still, I'm desperate for new space content. I'll take what I can get. And that new mining ship does look pretty cool.

This friday feature got me all excited about it. But most likely its not as cool as it looks. This new mining ship must have some insane mass to make it a better miner than any POB we have right now. I am still not sure how many people you need to mine, I assume its not a 1 person affair. than pirates issue, I doubt that slow s mining ship will outrun or outfight pirates unless they are TIER 1-3.

That looks like a bloody big ship...
I'm getting pretty excited about this expansion; the devs seem to be adding a lot of new "stuff" that can be applied to JtL to improve that expansion as well...

2 Points:
First, space mining looks awesome and I'm SO looking forward to trying it.
Second, with the Y-8, the mining laser is pilot controlled, right? You would need to be able to adjust the ship attitude and fire at asteroids at the same time. And the mining laser can be used as a weapon. So, is the Y-8 the first POB ship with a pilot controlled weapon?

I think that's the point. Running one of these things will be a group effort.

It looks like it. It would REALLY suck if they put it in the copilot's seat. With the reduced group sizes, organization is gonna be hectic in space. The *idea* crew for an mp ship is 8, one pilot, one co-pilot, two gunners, three repairmen, and one doc. Alternatively, two repairmen and two docs. If you wanted anyone else in it, you'd be out of group space. So I'm sincerely hoping that it's controlled by the pilot to reduce the number of people you need onboard.
