Its a shame I wasn't in Beta, because I'd probably have suggested this. Ah, well.
Is there any way you could add an ability for us to "/setspeed 180" or something, while flying? I've been playing the game for 2 days now, and it keeps bugging me. I'm using the mouse/keyboard combo, with the mouse on Virtual Joystick. I'm actually prefering that to most joystick games, because it gives me a greater sense of control. I can be more delicate with the mouse than I could be with a joystick. I've got it set up so that the left/right mouse buttons control roll, and the middle one does the same as ALT.
That works really well for flying and fighting in most situations. Its great for my Rebel character. But, when I got into a TIE Fighter on Kettemoor, I came up against a problem.
In the TIE training missions, you end up against a combination of X-Wings and Y-Wings. At full thrust, the TIE is great against Tier 1 X-Wings, and can do ok against Tier 2's. I got beaten by the Squad Leader (four X-Wings), because the fourth one managed to make a hole in my rear armour, and damage my engines a bit. With the loss of speed, I lost out on manoeuvrability. X-Wings are fine normally, though. Its when you start getting up against Y-Wings that it becomes a problem. They're too darn slow. I kept having to throttle back to 180 on my TIE, just so that I could manoeuvre slowly enough to keep my guns aimed at them, and not use myself as a high-speed projectile by crashing into them.
If I was using a joystick, I'd be ok, because of the throttle wheel...it'd probably be much quicker to switch down a notch or two. But on the keyboard, I have to hit Enter on my Numpad several times, to get it to work. Because the "1" key on my keyboard fires my blasters, it means I have to take my hands off the guns to change the speed. I'm contemplating setting the trigger up as mouse3, or perhaps trying to set the throttle up as the mouse wheel...but still, I'd like to have some pre-set speeds that I can go to.
I want to have a "crusing speed" to fly along in, so I can quite literally "accelerate to attack speed", and actually know what attack and cruising speed were. I've managed to pull off a few manoeuvres with throttle controls, using the "max speed", "all stop" and "match speed"keys, to let things overshoot me, and line up on their rear sheilds...that works particularly well against Kimogilas, if you're in a Z-95 with IFF Scramble. But still...I've seen pictures of an A-Wing in combat, and it has the potential to do some really kick-ass stuff. I'd like to get more "smart piloting" involved when I get one.
Any chance this could be done in a patch?

Try "Matchspeed"
or get a joystick with a throttle.
I can adjust my speed in increments of 1 with the greatest of ease!
I am teh pwn j00 throttleless one!

What your looking for is allready ingame.
I dont remember it exactly but you should try out what works or ask someone else.
What you do is make a macor saying simply /setspeed 0.5 (50% throttle) etc, so you can easily bind your favourite throttle settings to any keystroke.
NOTE:Im using my flightstick so I havent tried it and please if someone who knows for sure will be so kind to correct me.

Aaah...so you have to do it decimals. Ok.
And I have a joystick. I've just found that, for my flying style, the mouse is more comfortable. When I try flying with a joystick, unless its brand-new and perfectly tight, there's too much "flop". I do fairly sweeping movements, but end up bang on where I need to be. A mouse is better for that.

for the "flop" modify the dead zone, that gives you less chance of drifting beceuae your hand is resting on the stick or something. It sets a range in which it the joystick won't respond until it's outside of the box. Once the stick has gone out of the dead zone will start to respond.
By messing with this setting you can get it to fit your needs.

Thats the opposite of the problem. I like to use the "flop" zone for fine tuning. Its too loose...not responsive enough. And I can't afford to pay £50 for a new half-decent joystick.
Besides...the mouse works more than fine.

then what you do is shrink it, and up your sensitivity. What joystick do you have? Sidewinder 3d Pro's (usb and old gaming port models) seemed to work correctly.

The problem is, my joystick (LogiTek Wingman) is getting old, and its starting to loosen up. The kind of joystick I need is one with a spring-loaded collar that shuts down onto the base, and holds it central. Unfortunately,I don't have the cash to buy a new joystick right now...
And as I've said already, the mouse works fine. Don't fix what ain't broken.

Is there any way to set the scroll button on the mouse to control throttle? Like if I scroll up, it increase throttle and if I scroll down, it decreases...

ahhhhh..yeah your joystick was on the blacklist of sticks that worked horribly with the game. (sorry to say).

The command to numerically set your throttle is /throttle X.X, where 0.5 is 50%, 0.15 is 15%, and so forth. I've gotmy keymap set up so that F1 - F10sets the throttle to0.1 - 1.0, F11 gives me "thrusters" (3%), and F12 gives my 0%. Because my weapons controls are done on the 1-9 keys (as well as a few special abilities that I use a lot, and that aren't on the bottom row of the toolbar), I can basically do everything I need to on the keyboard while in combat, just by usinga single finger...I can adjust speed while firing, which was my main problem.
I've also got, for non-combat/fancy flying, Insert/Page Up as Decrease Throttle, with Home as 0%, and Delete/Page Down as Increase Throttle, with End as 100%. It works if you press both Ins and Pg Up at once...it gives mea kinda fake throttle feel, which is fairly cool.
Ok, it doesn't feel the same as using a joystick, but it works pretty darn well!
