I jsut got JTL. I find it a bit difficult to fly. Is it easier with a joy stick compared to mouse/keyboard?

Yes!

The only thing the mouse is better for is to turret gun in someone's multi-player ship.

I've played flight/space sims since the early 80's, owned dozens of joysticks, and I recommend the Saitek EVO. It's got tons of features, is almost totally adjustable to your hand and seating position, works for lefties and righties, and is reasonably priced ($35-$40 US). Best joystick I ever purchased. Not to mention, the glowing LED's and Borg look are quite nice =)

Agreed, it definitely is easier with a joystick.

i guess it all comes down to personal preference. Some people will tell you that they hate playing with a joystick. Personally, I can't play without my joystick, it drives me insane. If you are having trouble with mouse and keyboard, i highly recommend trying a joystick.

if you like flying in starwars ships, i recommend xwing:alliance, jedi starfighter, or xwing vs tie fighter. JTL interface is by far too difficult and the missions to repetative and the ai too boring to be worth playing.

As far as controls, i choose the mouse because aiming with the joystick is darn near impossible, the only advantage joystick has over mouse is a throttle control. Just pump your mouse inertia way high and make your mouse deadzone window real big.

too bad you have to put your mouse inertia back down to zero for on the ground though after each flight (unless you like picking up your mouse 8 times and scrolling it just to turn around 180 degrees)

I will be playing DDO and BF2:SF.

I haven't used a joystick but I bought an adapter soI could use my Playstation pad with the pc.

Hated it and use my mouse now without any problems. Gives better access to the keyboard IMO.

Joysticks make flying really, really, easy.

I can't imagine flying without a stick. I'd suggest a Saitek as well. I had a Logitech but it died pretty quickly. That's not to say all Logitechs would do the same but mine did. The comparable Saitek I got after that, I've had no problems with.

I haven't flown with a Joystick since MS Starlancer. I found it quite hard to track the reticals. Then I was forced to use a mouse with MS Freelancer. I found the mouse very effective for accuracy. In SWG, I have yet to try the joystick. I guess the mouse is hindering me from leveling out inside of gunboats.

Preference.

I used to use a CH Pro back in the early days of Wing Commander/X-Wing/Mechwarrior games, but I've been using Microsoft Sidewinders for a long time now. Recently had to buy a new one just for this game cause my old one wasn't USB compatable and I hadn't used it since like Mechwarrior 3.

I got the Logitech 3D Pro and I'm not too impressed with it tbh. The stick has a lot of right side bias such that it'll start drifting off to the right if I leave my hand resting on it. It also makes it a bit of a struggle to line up with targets because I'll find that I nudge the stick in any direction it will always throw me a few extra pixels to the right. Other then that it has been absolutely perfect, nice solid base, easy to set up, comfortable design, well placed buttons but all that doesn't really make up for the innaccurate stick. I might have been unlucky in getting a dodgy one but still it's a bit dissapointing.

As for the mouse vs joystick debate I'd say that there's no contest. There's a reason that all the modern fly-by-wire jet planes are equipped with joysticks and not mice

I used to fly all the time with a logitech wingman and liked it alot. But latly iv been flying with a mouse. Sure a joystick is easier but flying with a mouse just makes it a little more interactive i think. So id say both, depends how you like to play.
