Thread: JTL from the beginning

Imagine if JTL had been released as part of the SWG core game.

We would have been flying to get to other planets. That would mean launching, jumping, asking permission to land, etc.

Also imagine that while in space we would have to have our wits about us. If we were factionally alligned we would have to request "special" permission to land at certain planets, and we would have to run the gauntlet in certain areas of space which might spawn a CC or an ISD, which has just "jumped" in to do a patrol route!

Yes it is convenient getting on a shuttle and instantly appearing on a far distant planet, but somehow it seems less Star Warsy...sometimes. I use the shuttle option often although I take my own ship now. But every now and then I do the above. Yes it takes a little longer than usual, however the SW feel far outways this. The idea of flying or being a passenger (with a role) on a MP ship is exciting, even if just for a few moments.

OK so itwas not part of the SWG core game from the beginningand we have to live with it like it is, which, please do not get me wrong, is not bad! As I said it is convenient. It is just that sometimes it is nice to take the flight path less flown.

Perhaps if the next expansion includes planets, they might make this an option in game, in that you actually have to use your own transport to get there. Of course that means that JTL has to be rolled out to everyone.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

When I just have to do some semi-oocchores I use /travel. But when I am travelling with friends we usually launch in a multi-passenger ship and fly to the destination. Just more star warsy, and more fun to roleplay on the ship.

I agree completely. I fear everyone's strive for greater convenience is coming at the cost of a lessened RPG feel...which ironically SWG is supposed to be.

That is a lesson to learn from the EQ folks. Don't get me wrong I do not like the game but the people keep their wits about them in public. Less flaming and childish behavior and they stay in character very well.

I would love to see that more...

I'm not sure about flying being more Star Warsy.

Remember, Uncle Lucas was quite fond of using screen-wipes to just transition from one locale to the other. The traveling itself wasn't important, unless it was part of a chase or escape.

In fact, the use of screen wipes was panned by reviewers at the time, for being cheezy and amateurish. /rofl

So... if you feel like flying, then flying is Star Warsy. If you don't, then just /travel and focus on the next scene.

Hehe, If we get Bespin it'd be the perfect planet to test Atmospheric flying.

Loved reading your stories. Awesome material and very good ideas for roleplaying.

A well masked, "remove the travel button" post

Yeah, true, its not very RPGish, but there comes a point when you have to take account for the real life players. Not everyone wants to spend their online time on travel related things. People have things to do and the MMO market has plenty of competition.

If the travel button takes away from the imersion for you, simply don't use it. Noobdy's pointing a gun at your head ya know.

Whoa there Bud! Take a step back and look around before you post a flame. It was not a slight at the travel button. The post was to say, if you bothered to read it, that if JTL had been part of the core game from the beginning, it could have had far more options built into it than what we presently have. I made it quite clear that I use the travel option.

Holster your gun m8, I enjoy playing this game just as much as you, and when I need the immersion, I do exactly as you advise.

That wasnt a flame. Just an observation. Had it been intended as a flame i would have engaged into some serious, "wordsmithing"
