Thread: How to improve space loot without actually changing it

I agree it would be nice to have some quick visual cue as to the quality of the item. As it is I have over 3 houses full of loot, plus my safety deposit box, plus my backpack, plus most of my inventory. Eventually I'll go through it and start organizing it, but finding that one elusive piece in all of it is a daunting task...so most likely I'll just get another house and fill it up, too

Unless a system like this was adapted for everything in the game, ground and space, I don't want it. It's just a handholding measure that means people don't have to think as much. Firmly filed in the "it would be nice" category.

just check the numbers. the funnest thing about jtl is lifting quality loots from ppl who arent mentally capable of crunching simple numbers.

yup, I'm a firm believer in caveat emptor. if someone is silly enough to sell his reward engine on the bazaar (I've bought 4 that way) then they lose. Really, a system like this isnt necessary if you look at enough parts.

Ever since I was in JtL beta, I changed my inventory viewing habit. I have expanded the left pane on my window, so that I see the description of anything I click on. Its amazingly handy for looking at a lot of parts quickly and crunching the numbers, as Golrok said.

I also have my inventory set up that way to see at a glance what the stats of items are. I'm sure most every player out looting has their inventory screen set up like that. Perhaps you haven't noticed that they do color-code things in the ground game. You loot a weapon that has any specials associated with it, and it is colored yellow. Same with clothing that have attachments. If anything, it would be consistent to have exceptional space loot colored.

As to buying reward engines on the bazaar, maybe the seller has looted a better one, and is trying to help out his fellow pilots.

A misconception I had for a long time, was for reverse engereening loot. I thought that it had to be 'excatly' the same part, as in name. This is simply not true, it has to be the same type, and reverse engereenig lvl. The nice thing about finding good parts is you can use it for a while, damage it a bit. Then you can re it and get the better hitpoints, and maybe a little less mass (awing pilot I allways worry about mass). The thing you must remember is it takes the best stats of all pieces, so that low powered blaster has really low mass, you will get the lower mass, but keep the fire power of your faviorate weapon. Just take the time to read the stats, they kinda make sense . Really take the time to understand what reverse eng. does, lvl 5 stuff takes 5 reactors say, that is 5 chances to improve a stat.

In beta it was the way you describe: exactly the same component (name and all) that needed to be collected to be reverse engineered.

Good idea, but I shudder to think what would happen to the current loot prices were this introduced.

On the OTHER hand, I wonder how many exceptional pieces have been sold to the Chassis Dealer.

I offer another suggestion by programming another subroutine into the Chassis Dealer's sell dialog.

"Let's see what you have to sell."

*user selects exceptional item, unbeknownst to them, clicks "ok"*

"Whoa...hey, I'm all for taking a rube, but do you REALLY want to sell me this part for a junker price? Maybe you should take another look at it."

*after that, the person has to select either "yes, I'm sure," "okay, I'll take another look," or the all-popular "Stop conversing."

About reverse engineering:
Many (including myself at the beginning) get fooled by the description of how it works in the manual. It is stated that the components need exactly the same name. That would be impossible do handle, just imagine how long and how much inventory space it would take to get the right 10 lvl10 components of one name.

On the coloring and highlighting special stats:
It is about making looting more exciting. If you know some products from a certain company that released their mmorpg recently *hint*, maybe you understand my point. It is the feeling you get if something with the special color pops up in your inventory. You don't have to crunch through 6 stats, you know already it is something good.

On the ground we have something that goes in this direction. Special loot is usually yellowish. If I loot a CDEF pistol that is grey I destroy it without looking at its stats. If it is yellow I go and see if there is a nice DOT on it. That is what I mean. It is a preselection so you can concentrate on the important parts you found.

Edit: Of course it is just for convenience so it is low priority, but it is also easy to implement since it doesn't change the system but only the display.

I'm an imperial pilot ace with around 30mil prestige points.

When I loot a component and have a closer look at it I can tell by experience if it's something nice. There are already components with special names that are quite rare, they usually have at least one nice stat.

My idea now is to introduce some color code. Make it 3 different for example, what color doesn't matter a lot. The important thing is that you can see at first glance that you found something that is above average. If it is grey its just standard loot, if its "color 1" you know for sure that it has one stat that is above average. If it is "color 2" you know that you found a really exceptional component that has maybe 2 or more above average stats or 1 really exceptional.

The second part here is to actually display what stat is above average. As an example: today you loot some level 8 shield with (imaginary values)

- mass 20k
- regeneration rate 14.80
- front shield hp 2000
- back shields hp 2100

Now a common level 8 shield has maybe a random regenerationrate in between 12-13. The new way of displaying it would highlight the bonus for being exceptional:

- mass 20k
- regeneration rate 14.80 (+2.0)
- front shield hp 2000
- back shields hp 2100 (+100)

You can see very fast what values are above average.

If you want to continue this you could make the bonus a seperate value for reverse engineering. That is you find a standard level 8 shield with the max regeneration rate of 13.0, then you add an exceptional one with maybe 12.0 base regeneration rate and +2.0 bonus (making this a 14.0) you would get 15.0 plus the reverse engineering bonus.

I'm just missing the feeling "YES, I found something exceptional" when looking into my backpack. If I would see a "color 2" item that I know is exceptional popping up in the inventory it would be much more of a fun moment than just seeing "ok, its level x.. lets see if there is a good stat *working through stats*.. oh yes, that regeneration rate could be nice. Have to check with my other components"

Edit: Please sign if you like the idea

The thing I'd suggest is that the chassis dealer not look in your backpack. Him scrounging your pack makes a bank, house, or yacht run all but necessary to keep from selling off the good stuff.

If the devs give me the source code i'd implement it myself
