Thread: Where did SOE get the idea for the Tie Oppressor?
Is it an acutal Extended Universe Ship or did they just hatch it out of nowhere for JTL?
While im on the subject, does anyone else get the distinct impression that.
A.) it should have had 3 blasters
and
b.) the wings are on backwards?
If sony just made this ship up like the privateer ships i have a theory. If you look closely at the T/O's slotted wings you'll see what looks like what might have been meant as a gun port, on all three panels. Infact i think the wings were slotted BECAUSE of the gunports. Somewhere in the development process for whatever reason, i think they decided to move its design from 3 guns to 2. But that left an art problem so the flipped the wings around backwards as a quick fix and mounted the guns on the chin.
Seriously, i want more information about this ship
TIE Oppressor
"When we began doing our first round of Jump to Lightspeed concepts, first and foremost in our minds were to try and keep with the look of the spaceships already established in Episodes 4, 5 and 6.
"We needed a stronger, more armored looking fighter for our Empire Faction players to use as a gunship, so we started with the base design of the TIE-Fighter. We noticed that there were already more variations of the TIE-Fighter from the fiction then we were initially aware of, so we knew we had some latitude to play with in terms of the over all concept. We kept the basic cockpit area very much the same as the old design, but then went to work playing with the wing designs and adding extra, larger guns then the original. How many wings and of what size could we add before the design looked cumbersome and just generally out-of-wack? After a few rounds of concept drawings we decided that three wings, with a sleeker, more streamlined look then the TIE Fighter was just what the Space-Doctor ordered. We then played a round a bit with the body style, all the while keeping it similar to the original, and then added large gun turrets on the underside and rear of the craft for players to fire from.

As an addition to this line, why not use the Assault Gunboat from the XvT line? These were always the heavies of the imperial line (well, since TIE Fighter (the game), and devastating with all the misiles they carried. I would like to see a lambda ship in the JtL line. There are other makers of Imperial ships, but they are not represented in JtL.

The TIE from the XvT series was called the TIE Defender. It was similar to the TIE Oppressor, and I feel (since the XvT series was Lucas sponsored is EU?) it should have just been incorporated into JtL AS IS. For those of you who are interested, it had three equally spaced solar arrays around a TIE 'Eye', but the solar panels edges were turned OUT, as opposed to the TIE Interceptors, which are bent in. It was deadly fast, insanely manueverable, and shielded, and you almost always had to face three of them at a time..

I seriously think they considered it. Look VERY CLOSELY at the wings, and what looks like 3 gunports, one for each wing, just flip it around backwards and there you go. Granted howver, T/D panels were more U shaped, creating a 6 paneled appearance.
