Ok so there is a big revamp coming for the GCW on the ground. Bases will determine the controll of planets, and those planets will subsequently see increased presence of npc troopers for the winning faction. I say, why not extend this idea to space?
Space bases would require lots of faction bases to purchase (even more than the ground based ones). The bases could be placed by the owner open space. They would require maintainence and everything just like the ground bases.
Based on the number of bases each side has in a given space region, the controlling side will have more patrols of npc fighters. Bases could also allow overt players to repair there, and put the repair fee into the maintainence pool. Friendly players could dock and use the inside of the space station as a cantina/hospital.
Bases can be destroyed by attacks from opposing player fighters. They should be extremely difficult to destroy, at least as much as the targets in deep space right now, especially considering how much their owners pay for them. In lieu of actually destroying the station however, players can decide to board the station. Once on the station they could fight their way to the bridge past npcs and opposing players and attempt to gain control of the station (in a similiar puzzle fashion to destroying ground bases now). The base would then remain intact but switch sides. Only a limited number of docking ports would be available on the exterior of the station, so bringing in novas and decimators loaded with troops would be ideal over just docking the fighters that attacked the station.
Opinions? Ideas? Suggestions? Any idea how this would tie into the ground battle? Ideas for other benefits of controlling a sector?

I think if we do get Factional space stations it would most likely be in the 2nd expansion pack.
