Any ideas why my Ions may not be working.

I am 1110 and using the Mid-Range Ion Cannons. They are equipped... I can see them in my weapon groups. They simply do not fire. I have tried unloading my normal lasers and ONLY my ions and still I can't fire. I have tried putting ions as primary lasers as secondary still nothing... If I have ions selected (ie weapon group 2) and my lasers are my primary (ie WG 1) and I try to fire it automatically switches to weapon group 1.

Any ideas...
