Opening the wings gives you a bigger spread when firing.

Sorry that I couldn't search for previous threads on this...

What is the point of having wings that open and close, like on the X-Wing, B-Wing and Actis?

I've seen some notes that mention a speed boost when the wings are closed but I've yet to see any change in speed when doing so on my Actis.

Even if that's true, what advantage is there to opening the wings? I've found no documentation on any of thisso I apologize if I'm missing the point.

I believe the Actis speed boost must be bugged, same as the ARC.

But yes in the X-Wing, you get a small speed increase when they are closed, and then when open you go a tiny bit slower. same goes for the B-Wing.

Okay, that said... why open them at all? There's got to be some point to it besides a disadvantage.

No disadvantage.

When they are opened up this is called "Attack Formation" in which the ship is now ready to use it's guns.

Your ships have S-foils because the ones in the movies had S-foils. You open them in combat because the ships in the movies opened them in combat. It's not more more complicated than that. On the X-wing and B-wing it gives the guns a wider arc of fire. On the Arc-170 and the Actis I don't know why they even have them. I think they had them just so Odball could say "Lock S-foils in attack position". Lucas likes to repeat phrases in all his movies. That's also why everyone and their cousin says "I've got a bad feeling about this". You will even find that last phrase in just about every EU game, comic, or novel.

Dumb question (can't seem to find the answer in the Holo): How do you open/close the S-Foils?

The wider fire arc is the reason for the Xwing and Bwing. Technically, it shouldnt lose spd when open, but thats what SOE wanted to do for some reason. I'm not sure about the ARC, it could be the same reason as the Actis....which is that they hold radiators for the guns allowing them to cool faster in combat....more space they are exposed to, the faster they cool.

Opening of S-Foils, Technical/Real World Answer

By spreading out the manouvering thrusters that line the trailing edge of the Strike or Stabiliser foils and thethe wider spacing of the Ion engines meanyou get higher torque and therefore better manoueverability in rolls, yaws etc also you spread out the laser cannons so that the energy emissions from their firing and the radiation they produce don't interfere with each other. This of course is not featured in the game.

Also why in the vacuum of space you should be able to go faster with them shut doesn't make sense as there is zero drag in space!!

PS in one of the novella(one of the Xwing series)a pilot fires his cannons once in an emergency with the foils shut, must have hit an over-ride or something.

Many moons ago I bought a great Star Wars MMORPG, now look at what I'm stuck with!!

Well, technically it shouldnt matter weather the foils are opened or closed in terms of speed. Its not SOE though who should be faulted for the idea. Anybody having played the X-Wing starfighter game (and its follower B-Wing) will know that it was already handled like that in those game titles. I dont know though if that was the first occurance of this speed issue or if they got this from somewhere else too. I do like the idea though, even if its technically wrong, because it gives more tactical options: either you are able to blast things or you are a bit faster.
