Thread: Need Help With Targeting

I cannot make it past the second imperial mission. Each of the 4 waypoints spawn 4 X-Wings , a bit excessive for a beginner mission I think. When I get close enough to the waypoint the entire squadren attacks me. I have tried hitting the "," button, the "." button and cycled through targets using the "TAB" button. I cannot seem to aquire a target. I have checked and these buttons are bound properly. I will have one figher in visual range but continual "TAB' cycling does not seem to give me the red square telling me I have acquired it as the target. Somehow, after continually hitting keys, after about a minute I miraculously seem to finally acquire my target. But I only know when I have him in visual range because I can't get the blue arrow telling me the direction to my acquired target. All the while my ship is getting hammered. Then I die. In addition I get a repair bill of 2600 credits for a mission that pays what, a 100 credits? Alternatively I have to land, destroy my ship, travel to a cantina to repair my mind, travel to hospital to repair health and action and then travel back to base to start the whole mess all over again. This is a game where I am paying to have fun and all I am getting is anger and frustration. Please help.

Thanks

First I would recommend using the ship they give you till you get your first level for ship cert. This will save repair bills as you just keep asking for a new ship from the trainer. As far as targeting goes, I got waves of 3 Z95s. Your targets you need will be bracketed in the radar as well as visually. If you have a visual on one of them, hit the ESC key to untarget what you had, then shoot at the target. As soon as you hit it once or twice it will become your target.

I never use targeting unless I'm using missles. "Your" targets are already bracketed in red, all you have to do is learn to "lead" your target, just judge there speed and angle and fire ahead of them accordingly. The more perpindicular they are to your flight path the more you'll have to lead....

I have no problem killing them once I get them targeted. I know the lead thing. The problem I have is acquiring the target. I can't get the red brackets. I read a post by one of the developers that you have to acquire the target beforeyou can do any damage to it. That's why I kept on trying to acquire before shooting. I didn't know about the ESC - fire - automatic red bracket thing. I'll give that one a try. Is there a way to get free repairs in space? I'm tired of having to land, get a new ship and run all the way back to find a cantina and hospital to heal my massive amounts of damage every time I get killed.

Thanks

Make sure you're not in mouse mode. I doubt this is your problem, but you never know. Also, why are you healing your wounds? Since you're doing all your fighting in space, I would just wait until you are ready to fight again on the ground before healing.

Unforunately there is no free repairs in space. You can get repair kits from SWs to repair componants, but they only work on the ground, unless you are in a MP ship.

Ok first off never use TAB unless you HAVE to

Best way to target for your missions is this:
Your mission targets will be bracketted both on the radar and on your screen. Center one in your crosshairs and hit X (target under crosshairs, or map that to a button on your joystick).

This way you'll be sure to be attacking the correct ships.

TAB is a bad targetting method when doing early missions because there are Tier 2 and 3 ships flitting around near some of the mission waypoints and you could accidently target one and piss him off... something you DONT wanna do in a starter ship

Agreed, TAB is only really useful when you have missions that tell you to go to a waypoint and look around for a specific spawn.... Nym Lieutenant...etc

There must be a limit to the amount of damage I can take, no? I mean after 2 deaths I am down 30-40%. What happens after 6 deaths, a likely scenario given my piloting skills . Thanks for the "X" thing. Didn't see that one in the manual.

In space you can be totaly black berred and 1000bf and it won't make a difference.

Yeah, line them up and use X. When you're just flying around looking for stuff use T for targeting enemies. TAB has been pretty useless sinceback in the earlier stages of beta.

Also when you get attacked by multiple enemies watch your radar. Ships nearer to you will show up as larger dots on the radar. When they are firing on you they should blink as well. Even if you don't have a blue arrow leading you to the ship that's attacking you can find them on the radar fairly easily.
