Thread: Making Space Stations Worth While... Should be implemented with new Expansion

I thought I would bring this back up in order to try and get more support. Space really needs something like this. Please more people tell me what you think. Updated 3-19-05



A space station that can be used to go inside? What an idea It sounds great, but how does one implement such an idea First off, we need to think what we would want most out of our station. It could have...



  • Shops - anything having to do with sales of items. One would probably want to stick to having vendors for ship items and accesories considering we have plenty of everything else on the ground game. This would have to be a separate deckso that maybe 10 or so shop owners could be there. Yes, these would be player rented shops.(Also, on further note, if mining were implemented this would be a great place to sell valuable minerals only found in space.)



  • A Medical Center - a place for healing one's physical body. It can get so annoying at times to have to /eject in combat and then lose part of your HAM, a medical center would be ideal for a person who hates having to load to the ground and then walk down to the Medical Center in hopes of finding a doctor.



  • A Cantina - a place for healing one's mental body. Just the same as above, it gets annoying and here could be a great place to give your mind some praise. Here you could also find those fun gambeling machines to kill some time.



  • A Repair/ LandingDeck -a place to look around and give your ship much needed attention - This would be nice to, in sense force people to board the space station. When you dock with the station, your ship would autmatically go here. You would find your way to the Repair Deck and talk to the NPCofficer on duty and he'll will ask if you would like to go back to space or have your ship repaired. If you chose the repair option then maybe a 10 minute repair would be put in place to sort of force people to stay on the station for a while to keep it from becoming a barren wasteland. Also, here you would find all of the ammenities that you get at a starport, the chassis dealer,shipwright trainer, and even a shuttle for when youdon't have a ship, how convenient!?!



  • A veiw deck - a deck to look outside. Space is beautiful, why not observe it from a room with huge windows. This would be so nice, just to hang out and kill some time, while also giving some appeal and a sense of being in space.



  • Residential Deck - living in space! I am not so sure of this, but I am sure it would increase the popularity of the idea of a space station. What you would do is have a few decks dedicated totally to the paying customers. There could be a variety of plans to fit your budget. Small, medium, and large plan apartments could be added, of course for a lot penalty, maybe for the really expensive apartments you could have your own personal garage where you could land your ship.. Maybe even throw in a guildhall or two. These would goon the first come first serve bases, however, because of the amount of people who wouldprobably want to live in space, if there were some one who missed a payment, say they were weekly, then they would get a notice, and then the nextpayment they missed they would then be evicted.


So far this is all Icould think of for now, I am really looking to get some feedback on this, so plese, reply away. As for the actual problem for getting skins for this station, what they could do is use the initialskins for the tutorial space station, and the starports. For the apartments there could be a variety of plans avalable, how hard could it be? I mean surely you candesign a layout and then use the skins that are already implemented in the ground game. There would be oneof these stations persector of space, except deep space and kessle. They wouldn't have to be too big. Lastly, these stationswould also serve the same purposes as theold. Justradio in using the /commcommandcomand and then you could go to the planet or get some work. I love this idea. I would be willing to answer any questions you have.Please reply anyone, I am interested in hearing what everyone has to say.

they had some like that in earth and beyond so there is no reason why they couldnt do it in this game.

Sounds great to me, im all for it. Would give people who arent into the whole flying thing a reason to go into space.

I agree stations, and space in general needs to have more purpose to it other than fighting/grinding/farming

I really likeall of yourideas. I have actaully been wanting to write a postwith some of these same ideas. I have only had JTL for 2 weeks, andsince i have mastered I have gotten kinda bored in space. Here are a couple more things that I would like to add that would make JTL more exciting:

1. Have more areas that people can actually land and interact with others. This includes the space stations that have already been discussed. Additionally I would really like to have somewhere we could land and actaully fight. There is already the artwork done for the corvette, make some that are a little more soloable, or even able to be taken in smaller groups. (getting a full group to launch an interrior attack on a vette in space my be difficult. these areas wouldnt have to be huge, but even docking with a larger ship once you disable it and you have to fight your way to the cargo hold or bridge or whatever.

-obvious locations would be reb and imp, but can also have a Hutt, Black Sun, Corsec, you get the Idea.


2. Another thing that would help is to have more loot that isnt just ship parts. While those are extremely important, any other loot is either so rare that your chances of getting it is pretty nil, or usless. I think that in the close to10 mil xp that i have gained through getting master and beyond, i have only looted 3 or 4 items that werent ship parts and these were all looted off tier one and 2 ships.


3. I know that smugglers have gotten the shaft on the ground, here is a chance to rectify that.

-Allow smugglersthrough ground and/or space smuggling professions to take a mission that has you transporting goods from one planet to another.(and please no escorting, itis a real pain in the@$$ they ususally take FOREVER because you have to go the speed of the cargo ship and arent worth the payout). Not to mention that you dont really feel involved

-These goods could be either legal or illegal. If you choose illegal the payout would be much higher(even split four ways), but if you choose illegal you open yourself to PvP. Of course there would be NPC's in the way, but anyone declared or not(including rebs imps or even neutrals)could inspect you and if you are carrying illegal goods could blast you. If they succeed they can then report to their respective group and recieve a substancial reward. Also making the difficulty of the missions a little random, some where it is very unlikely that you will even succeed unless you have a good group of pilots with you to very easy. To me adding the randomness makes it feel alittle more SW, You never know what you will run into.

-I know that the Dev team is always concerned about money sinks at least to some degree, so the missions with the best payouts should actaully have a deposit that you must pay before you even start (say 30% of the mission value). So if you get a mission that pays 150k the deposit would be 50k...Once you succeed you would recieve the deposit+reward. Many people they would think that 150k profit is too much, but say if you have the YT with 4 crew plus another escort ship, that is 5 or even 6 ppl that would split this the payout int really that high. If the devs are concerned about dumoing too much money into the player base, some of the rewards could be could be very good ship parts, or even some of the very good loot that is dropped on the ground. In the case of loot rewards you are actually paying for it, but at a reduced price(cost of deposit).

-As I mentioned earlier, missions wouldnt have a difficulty rating per say becasue it would be random. But the missions would be rated upon cargo ratings(how much they could hold)...the more you can hold, usually the more you will get paid. Each tier/ship would have a corgo rating from 1- 10. One being the figthers(maybe even 0 for some) and 10 for the Multi passenger. Of course 10 for YT1300, but perhaps 8 for imp and 9 or 10 for reb multipassenger ships. Not even sure Imps should have the option, but I am sure that the empire would want to transport some things that they wouldnt want the general public to know about.



P.S.- if anyof these things are already in the game or you have run across something fun to do in space please let me know. I may not know of it yet.



Anyway that is all i can think of at this moment, I am sure once I post this I will remember something. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Just trying to make the game more fun interesting, and most important have the feel of the SW universe.

This is a good idea, but it would take forever to develop. Like I said in my thread about this subject, it would be nice to have a quick fix to tie in some added functionality while we wait on a bigger project idea like this one.

I see how some of it would be time consuming to do(interior to stations and such), but some of the mission ideas dont seem very complicated, but then again I am not a programmer. You could even get them from your previous trainers, or even have in various places(ie Jabbas palace for us smugglers)

I was also thinking that you could do odd jobs on the space station to get paid and some XP. Maybe repairs, on ships in the garage and the station itself.

The last thing I want to happen is forspace to slowdown, so I was thinking. Make itlike a ship. What you would dofly up from the gound to there, or just dock with yourship, but make it a whole different loadingzone. This would mininmize lag for us slow internet users. Also maybe make a separate loading zone within the station for the residential area.


Also,to enter an apartment you would have toselect a terminal on the door and enter a password.

One last thing. I have drawn up a few floor plans just to get a very basic idea of what the layout should be. If I could scan anything o I would just show you a pic,but I don't have a scanner.


The inside design is very simple, everything faces outside so you can get a great view. I was even thinking of a glass-bottem floor onone of the deck so you couldsee the repairs going on below. Anyways, Theoutside I can't really figure out. Butif anyone would like to share ideas about the actualy layout then please do so. Just so youknow,I do floor plans and layouts as a hobby. I want to see what otherpeople are thinking.

I am not sure what server your on, I am on Bloodfin and Space is dead. Almost everyone I know made master pilot and only uses ships to travel now. We need a lot more content in space, your ideas are great and I would love to see them implemented.
