Thread: Actual cockpit switches & buttons how to?

I know this will sound super nerdy, but.. does anyone know how one could make actual switches and buttons that do one particular thing - like in the Falcon? I'd love to have a switch I'd flip for hyperspace for instance. Maybe another for /dock etc.
It MUST be possible to do it! Anyone got any constructive advice?

macros?
i.e. write a macro for docking like this:
c
/comm
this should target the closest station and communicatwe with it, all you need to do then is click "I want to land".
or for hyperspace.. dont know the exact syntax, but should be something like:
/hyperspace tatooine:1 or alike...

Eh no, I don't mean a macro.
I mean like.. ok, let me give you an example: You make a macro that says /dock on F9. When I press f9, I'll dock. What I want is to have another button, a real button, instead of the F9 ! I could go to any store and get any switch / button hardware. I just want to like.. put the switch in the roof perhaps so I must raise my arm and physically "switch on" the (previously) F9 button (with whatever orders I have assigned to it).. get the idea?

Oh, I see... neat idea Especially when viewed from the Roleplaying side o.t. game.
Especially when viewed from the Roleplaying side o.t. game.But would it be practical? Would it not be easier to let the dev´s give us commands for it and when they are used the charakter does a emote for reaching these buttons..?

Im only at a Tie fighter level now but, I dont see any meters or lights in my cockpit who realy do anything...
I mean it would be very cool if the shield/armour damage was viewable at a screen in your cockpit instead of it beeing arround the radar...
Another example would be: The ammo or your weapon capacitator level should be showed in your cockpit at a bar or so as well. Speed meters, shield meters... everything should be.
For buttons, hmm could be some cool stuff like activating boosters and stuff.

Yeah that would have been nice too - but I don't mean a change in the interface. I mean "how can I modify my keyboard"?
You know, those who like playing car games like to immerse themselves into the gameusing a wheel and pedals instead of using a joystick or mouse / keyboard - things like these: Wheel & Pedals
Since there isn't any actual "Falcon" cockpits I can buy, I'd have to build it myself. So - how could I do this?

Dont take this wrong But that´s kinda scary 
Building ur own cockpit sounds kinda like ur loosing grip on reality and thats dangerous (no offence intended!!!).

check www.flightsim.com They have info on building airplane cockpits, and interfaces that let you have buttons that emmulate certain keystrokes, I'm sure you could program them to be an F key that runs certain macros. Good luck on your project!

Err.. you'd lack overhead switches, but I'd just buy Steel Battalion and see if you cna't mod the controller. Plenty of switches n'stuff there...

No no no.. lol. I said it was supernerdy didn't I? I didn't mean to actually build a whole cockpit - I just wanna know this for instance: Can I pull out F9 and connect it to a switch that I could glue to any surface wherever I want..! Yup, I'm a big star wars fan, but I don't think this is any more unusual than people wanting a wheel and pedals for their car racing games. I checked out www.flightsim.com - it's not quite what I mean. I do have a joystick and I'm happy with the one I have. The Steel Battalion is very close to what I'm thinking of, but I'd like to be able to modify it myself (...what I want is just a button, typeabove my head to enter hyperspace. I'd love it! )

Sounds like aawsome Idea. I would love to have a emergency button to hit when i need to use emergency shields or to hyperspace to get out of a jam, like jumpingnear a spawn of teir 4 agros in a Z-95. 
it would be cool if it would be able to activate any item in your F keys reguardless if there on the same tool bar.

WWW.saitek.com has all the buttons. Azzixx drools over the X52
