Hi, I love the way the ship explosions look in space, escept that almost every time a ship blows up I'm reduced to 1-2 FPS for the duration of the explosion. I have a gig of RAM and all my drivers are up to date, so I'm pretty sure my performance is as good as it's likely to get for quite a while. however the lag these are creating is making it very dificult to keep up with other folks in space. I'd appreciate any suggestions on a way to disable these beautiful but problematic explosions.

Graphics lag is caused by the video card, not system memory.

Turn off bloom in your options. Other than that, make sure your video card complies with the system requirements posted above.

My video card has 256MB of video RAM, but is an FX5200, mediocre at best, having only around 300MHz RAMDAC speed.

Look for a card that is closer to 400MHz+.

That's interesting....are you talking about the core speed or the memory speed......my card is sitting at nearly 300 core speed and a bit over 400 memory speed and I get the same FPS drop as the orignal poster......however I don't have a 1 gig RAM.....

I have a GeForce FX 5200 128 mb card and I do not lag at all with the ship explosions or in space at all. I also only have 512mb of system memory and I still see no serious drop in game performance.

More the core engine speed, then the RAMDAC speed, in order of importance. You're not going to find a higher core than RAMDAC, but the higher the core speed, the better (and more expensive) the video card.

speaking of vid cards. I am looking into buying a new one and would appreciate some suggestions.
