Jump To Lightspeed Archive

So I remember a thread touching on this but cant find it now... So yesterday I get jtl along with a friend and going up in my sub and y-wing is fine but ill be damned if we can find each other when we go up in our own ships. Can someone explain this to me, is space semi instanced? if so how do we get into space in our own ships together?
