I target the engines (on the steal imperial ship mission, tier 2) but when I fire I damage the ship normally. Anything I could be doing wrong?

In order to hit the engines, you need to break through it's armor and/or shields. Once you've broken through on one side (front or back) continue hitting the target until it's engine % goes disappears on the target window. This will disable the vehicle from moving. It still will be able to fire at you (which can get you bad if it's a lamda shuttle with the reverse cannon). You can then disable its weapons and/or reactor as well. Make sure you either stay behind it or in front of it depending on what side of its shields/armor you knocked out, as you'll have to knock out the other side to hit it's parts again.

I noticed that when I drop in behind a bigger ship and try to disable a component i would first need to destroy the rear shields and armor completely. So before i could damage the component i would need to get shield and armor down to 50%.

He speaks the truth.

When you're doing it though, watch your six. I was up against 4 Tier 2 X-Wings during the Tier 1 destroy missions. I can handle 1, 2 and 3 fine...but when I had a fourth guy to contend with, he kept popping off shots into my rear while I was after no 3. So be careful.
