That way, it wouldn't be "escort the Rebel shuttle. Expect 8-10 waves of 3 TIEs. Done? Kewl. Do it again and again and again"

Here's what I'll do: I'll load up X-Wing Allaince, X-Wing, TIE fighter, etc and use some of those mission ideas. Maybe a "Patrol these three sectors" here and an "Inspect this enemy radar satellite" there. I could add in a "My sister did something stupid and I have to bail her out" and maybe an "Inspect this massive convoy, but don't engage or you'll die" for flavor. If I felt crazy, I could help a defecting pilot reach my commander. Maybe I'd even consider an "attack this convoy that got lost". The ultimate mission might be a "Hurry. You home fleet is under attack. Help stave off the attack", but I might need to rest before writing the two paragraphs for that one...

There, now that wasn't so hard, was it? How much does SOE pay the Devs? Man, I'm in the wrong business...

EDIT/REVISION: OK, there IS some content. The problem is the in-between "get enough XP to get a fun mission". If you stay in your Tier, it'll take forever and you'll feel like it's a grind. I found that jumping around looking for your Tier "+1" enemies speedsthe Xp along and gets you to fun missions faster. I retract some of my original statement. What the devs SHOULD do is make some of those grinding missionsm deal w/ "Tier +1" enemies. if I'm grinding Tier 2, make me fight some slower Tier 3 enemies on occassion. Vary the type of craft that attacks my escort, etc. Overall, though... "Good job devs. now add something so I want to land and do the ground game again..."

Edit 2: Let me change the above to simply "Good job Devs." That last mission in the Tier 2 Rebel progression was GREAT! Nice twist!

well even though your post is slightly sarcatsic, i do agree.

instead of flaming im just gonna list my goods and bads so far in jtl.. starting with the goods.

What i like:

  • Grahphical environment - it looks really nice, gotta say.

  • Sound - yeah generally i like the sound when fighting in space.. a bit more music would be nice, and not having the very annoying overlapping instance of tunes would be even better. I like that you can hear when youve gone through an enemys shield and hit the hull.l... Privateer had this and it was nice.

  • Controls - not perfect but theyll do.. i would prefer an option to have more old time Elite style controls with ease-in/out on the roll and basically only use the roll on ship Z axis + pitch on ship x axis to control the ship.. interia would be excellent, but i guess the younger generationcant handle this (tsk tsk, youth today).

  • Ship Costumazation - also nice, lots of things to fiddle with which is always good.

  • Collision detection - seem to be working very smoothly and actually does a pretty good detection generally.

  • No predetermined % chance to hit.. its seems to be more directly "you shoot and you might hit" unlike the ground game which is more of a "roll the dice" kinda play.. really nice, just wonder how well it will work when theres 50+ players in the same area.

  • Being selfpropelled between planets - by far this is currently the most valuable feature.

What i dont like:

  • Very very limited space sectors .. its basiclly 16k * 16k * 16k meters in size.. or 16 cubic kilometers.. i flew from one end to the other with my noob ship (tat sector, but its the same all over) in a few minutes.. big let down.. you never really leave "local orbit" of the planet you launch from. Space is big.. JTL space isnt, theres no sense of grand scale, no hidden bases you cant instantly see if you cycle though the targets a bit, no real reason to go exploring... its not space, its abig aquarium with a starmap wallpaper.

  • Enemy AI - now im not very high level yet so this may yet come, but even low level AI should try and avoid your shots and not just circle around you mindlessly.. very boring.

  • Nice collision, too bad its not used for anything.. if i ram an asteroid or a ship i want to take damage... and deal it too.. again, old game Privateer had this implemented perfectly, you could use your ships hull as a last line of offence and basically ram your enemy if you judged that you might survive it... plus it adds a bit more gameplay that you actually have to be a little carefull... whats with the carebear style gameplay?

  • Not being able to dock on spacestations and carry out you commerce here.. i dont need to land on tat, i just want to shop on the bazar, comeon... spacestations please.

  • Not being able to land on planets where you choose, in one form or the other. At the very least player cities should have an option to put up a spaceport, but id much rather prefer to be able to land my gloirous noob ship right on top of a kimo.

  • Lack of content.. as original poster hinted, the "go fetch" "go escort" "go kill" style missions gets very boring and is a cheap and quick excuse for content, while its something to do its not very engaging, it lacks the elemnt of suprise.

  • Lack of cutscenes showing your current ship launching from spaceport.. yeah, i want a top view of mos eisley.

  • Not being able to fly around on planets. Yeah i know theres implications, and it sorta opens up a can of worms probably, but still.. having the space game and ground game more seemsly integreated in one way or the other would make sense... i got really nice ship docked here, why do i have to take the shuttle to my final destination? Luke never had to! (concept of public transportation in general is broken imo, atleast for planets like Lok).

And yeah, having bothered to look at the old xwing/tie fighter games might have given rise to some ideas and stuff that would have served this game very well.

I gave them the Death Star Simulator and Badge idea for free. Just takes time to code stuff.

They can add content. Getting the functions up and stable was more imporant.

There is dynamic PVP contenttoo coming in a few weeks too!

in the n00b tat imp missions... they give you patrol missions. as well as escort of course and the ol' hunt and kill standby. There are missions that go up and there are some missions that are disable rather than destroy, there are inspect missions, and a few more patrol missions. And if you bother reading the banter between yourself and the mission giver, maybe you will notice a bit of sotry and flavor, the scripting is pretty cool. I think they should have voice-overs... not only because it is cool... but so that people don't just click through the missions.

but yes, there should be more.

IT should be a Badge: ...Has escorted the entire population of Tatooine

"Flying against Tycho was probably the most difficult thing I'd ever done, and I had an edge in the Force. What he did, what Wedge did, without being able to use the Force made them far more special than any Jedi. They flew with their heart and brains and their entire being."

I agree with Drunkensod.
I would like to be able to actually move in space, like flying around the planet, space should be very big, no limitations would be the best. But beeing able to fly around the planet would be something.

Well having played a bit more I'll agree with original poster that the missions are there, and it does have an xwing/tie fighter feel about it.. too bad im neutral pilot coz we pretty much get more of the same hehe.

But the rest remains.. i suppose the idea from the developers was to re-create those old titles in a mmoprg universe and to that extend theyve succeded pretty much, but theres no sense of being able to do what you want, youre always following someones mission and as a privateer youre basically just a pirate fighting other pirates.

Stuff to explore.. civilians to kill.. slaves to sell.. transports to ravege and pluder HRRR.. ect. ect. that part of it is missing.

But anyway, its still a job well done within the context, i guess, the developers created. That it doesnt quite live up to my hopes is something else entirely.
