It took me several attempts to get through this despite all the advice I had read on the forum. I believe I now have a foolproof way disable this little baby and either not have the gunboats spawn or to leave the corvette with little enough time before it hypers that they are not a problem.
Firstly you need to be capable of taking on a couple of tier 5 fighters and a handful of lower tier ships (think it is 6 in total).
Make sure you are not overt (in space) and that you have a waypoint created to the Rebel station and that it is active.
Also, unless you are a confident pilot you will find the following droid commands extremely useful:
Engine Overload 3
Weapon Overload 3
Reactor Overload 3
Capacitor Overload 3
Capacitor to Shield Shunt 3 or 4
These commands will damage your systems, but little enough that there is no permanent damage to your components providing you remember to repair before you land!!
Now for the tactics I used...
First off get to the vette and engage the fighter escort - make certain that no stray shots hit the vette and it will stay neutral and not attack you until you are ready.
Destroy the fighter escort - you can take your time over this as you will want to wait a while before engaging the vette.
Once the fighter escort is destroyed target the vette and fly in behind the engines. Cycle targets until Shield 100% shows in red. DO NOT FIRE ON IT YET!
You should be able to see the waypoint you created at the rebel outpost on your screen showing your current distance from it. It is important not to begin the attack until you are about 8800m from the waypoint. The reason for this is that the vette makes a couple of turns towards the rebel station during its flight, the final onebeing about 8800m out. If you have aggro'd the vette before this it is very difficult to keep yourself out of the line of fire whilst the vette turns as your ship will handle like a brick at the speedyou are flying- it resulted in me dying 3 times!! (Obviously if you are a seasoned space vette you may be better at keeping out of the firing arc of the guns).
Ok, so now you're 8800m away from the Rebel space station and positioned directly behind the vettes engines with the primary shield targetted. The engine looks something like this:
OOO O
OO O
O OOO
You need to position your self here (where you are the x):
OOO O
OO O x
O OOO
So that you are facing towards the front of the vette inside a little 'valley' looking directly at the target indicator for the primary shield. Between you and the shield is a big gun - don't target it but fire at it anyway (it should blow up pretty quickly). This will leave your firing path to the primary shield generator relatively clear, however, you will still not be able to hit it from your current position. What you need to is increase speed slightly (very slightly!) and point your nose up a little so you move a little bit away from the vette (I'm only talking about a few meters). If you move to far away the guns will start to hit you. In either case, drop your speed back a notch again and point your nose down and fire - you should see the shield % in red start to drop. Repeat this manuever until it is destroyed.
Always make sure you do not move to far away from the vette and always return to your starting position (in the 'valley'before trying again or things can start to get hairy
).
Once the primary shield is gone duck back down so you are in the 'valley' then cut power to your engines so the vette moves past you. Once you are behind the engines again, roll your ship over and repeat this preocedure on the other side (after the primary shield is gone it should auto target the secondary shield - if not cycle targets till you find it). I found on the side with the secondary shield the guns were able to hit me a little more easily so just be a bit more careful about how far you move from the vette - try and keep it so that you are never fully out of the 'valley' I keep talking about.
Once the secondary shield is gone, cut power to the engines again and wait for the vette to pass you. Move back into position directly behind the engines and target them remembering to /matchspeed.
Check the distance to the Rebel outpost (have a look at the waypoint you created earlier). If you are between 5000 and 6000m away open fire on the engines immediately, if you are still over 7000m you may want to wait a bit (I opened fire at about 6500m and had 3 gunboats spawn but more on that later
). Apparently if you disable around 5000m then the gunboats don't spawn, don't leave it too long though or the vette will hyper out of the area, misison failed.
Once the vette's engines are disabled cut your engines. You need to wait for the rebel engineers to take over the vette before it stops aggroing you - so stay put in the blind spot behind the engines until the vette turns yellow on your radar.
That's the difficult bit done! All you have to do now is face down 2 or 3 waves of fighters (similar to the escort when you first got to the vette but only 3 or 4 ships at a time).
If you're lucky no gunboats will spawn so all that remains is to talk to the rebel outpost for your reward.
If the gunboats do spawn - be careful not to hit them! They will automatically go for the vette unless you start shooting them. Some people have reported the vette getting destroyed by the gunboats but it was never in danger during my attempt and providing you left it as long as possible to disable the vette your mission should complete anyway before the vette is destroyed.
Now, a final word of warning - after the vette had hypered out of the area the three gunboats turned their attention to me which resulted in a very quick trip back to Kashyyyk station and another hefty repair bill. When I went back they were still there, lurking about around the outpost and aggroed me the second I was in range.
I eventually managed to draw them far enough away from the station that I was able to /comm and get my reward but it was pretty tough going for a while! Oh, and Chimaereans beware... I think they are still there...
Hope this is of some use to those of you having problems finishing this mission!!

Good guide.
When I did it, I flew as wingman cause the Flight leader had done the mission successfully several times.
We killed the escorts first. As soon as they were dead, he had me back off 1500 M while he began the capture process by the well known Kill gun 5 and Spacebomb the Shields. I was worried about doing the capture part so far from the station, mostly worried about the Gunboats. There was just the two of us, but the Flight lead said not to worry, just don't fire on the gunships when they show up.
The capture went normally, and the 3 waves of fighters came in. We killed them in short order, and the Gunboats then showed up.
The Leader reminded me not to shoot at them, and had me back off again to 1500 - 2000 M. I had a great seat for the next 10 or so minutes, as the Corvette sailed on, with the gunships moving around it, blasting away. I was nervous, watching it's condition dropping slowly from 87% down thru the 70's, then 60's but he said it would jump with about 50% remaining, and sure enough it jumped at 59%.
Because I was so far back, when it jumped, the Gunboats never saw me, never aggro'd on me. I just flew around them, came to the Outpost from the other side, and did a quick /comm.
All in all, it was a very smooth operation.

Which corvette is this exactly?
Do you have to kill ANOTHER corvette to get the Advanced xwing? or is this the MP quest?
Who gives you the misison for the advanced xwing anyway?

This is the advanced x-wing corvette - not the one you need for master pilot.
You start the mission by talking to Kashyyyk space station (Rian Ry) about 'What's going on around here' or something. She'll give you a couple of escorts missions (easy) then send you to talk to Eyma on the ground who will give you another escort (easy again). Then it's back to Rian Ry for yet another escort and then you get sent back to Eyma again who sends you off to kill the Gharg leader (all easy again).
BeforeEyma's second mission he will ask you if the Gharg are weak or strong - you have to reply they are powerful and numerous, the other option bugs the mission.
After completing all of Eyma's missions he will tell you the Rebel Outpost wants to speak with you, so launch into space and go talk with them. When you get the option tell them 'I am looking for a challenge' and they will send you after the vette (then see above
)

Excellent guide!
Tip from my experience: I had to shoot many times before the shields indicated that they were damaged. It goes like this:100% - shoot many times - 88% - shoot many times - 76% and so on. The percantage isn't decreased for every hit. (of course this can be me just being noobish and not understanding something)
I made it as a 4-3-3-3 pilot and an X-Wing.

You have to target the component locations where you see them on the HUD
They will go down for every shot provided you aim correctly
Either that, or you weren't using powerful blasters.

Personally, I found IFF scramble did nothing - gun 5 still pumelled me into oblivion.
I guess missiles/space bombs would be easier but using the method I outlined above I didn't have to use any and was never in any real danger.
Just got to watch out for those gunboats if they spawn!
Oh and with the shields - they will go down constantly if you get a clean hit, but you can take them down by staying right up against the engine and blasting away but I found this took too long for me and the vette would hyper away before I got the secondary shield down.

A quick Rebel addition.
I've done the mission multiple times with no trouble. After taking out the escort, follow the vette until it is about 5500m away from the rebel outpost and approach the Vette from beneath and behind. It will not fire on you until you shoot it or your missile lands.
Lock onto one of the shield generators and and fire a spacebomb at it. Immeadiately turn 90 degrees down and boost away. By the time the missile hits, you should be well out of the vette's range. Return to yout original position and make another run on the other shieldand fire an /iffscramble if turret 5 is causing you a lot of grief. Boost away again.
Angle your shields forward if you are worried. Get a gun lock on the engines and either use your guns on the hitbox or fire a missle. Boost to the engine hitbox while firing. The vette should disable in a second or two.
If you have a very fast ship, 1200speed under boostor so, you probably won't even need to use /iffscramble or angle the shields. There also is a static spawn of ships which will aggro it as well, they'll keep a few turrets busy for a minute.
