I'm having a hard time with escort missions because I loose track of the ship I'm escorting. I take on one of the attackers, kill it, then spin wildly hitting "tab" and "x" trying to find the ship I'm protecting before it's destroyed by the others. Is there a key that will highlight the specific ship/s tied to your mission rather than every other ship and asteroid nearby? Thanks.

Watch your waypoints. Every 100m or so that your taget ship moves, it will update the wp for its location. Make sure you have the "On screen waypoint monitor" enabled on the options menu.

Not every mission keeps a continiously updating waypoint on the Escort target.
You must try to keep track of your escort target yourself a little. Your escort target will allways have white brackets that you can see to up to 3,5km of distance.
Whilst in combat, allways keep an eye on your escort target as well... you will get used to it at some point and then you wont have any trouble finding it anymore.
It´s something you learn through experience only...

All mission critical ships (including those you have to kill) have a little yellow bracket in the target scope. If you are doing an escort and kill the attackers, it will be the only one left. It looks very slightly different from the enemy mission critical brackets. After a couple escorts, you'll get used to it.
