Obviously I should skip the Gunboats when doing this master level kill task, however, is there a good way to deal with these guys? They seem to track on you and turn to keep their tail and underside from being exposed, but I don't like having something that tends to outdo me in game. I'm a longtime flight sim player, so that annoys me.
- Strafing runs
- Shield front adjust (droid program)
- Massive firepower
- Disable engine first
That's pretty much it for these kind of gunboats for solo.
If you bring something witha turret and a fellow player in the turret then it's a simple matter of agroing it and start flying 550m in front of it, killing it with your turret. You won't get hit at all.

Unfortunately the two strategies prior to that ignore the fact that I'm not talking about straight flying, on rails gunboats. I'm talking about the ones that aggro you, and roll their guns towards you if you try to fly at them from the rear or bottom. I know the 570m thing, it works great if the target doesn't turn, but these do.
There are 3 kinds of gunboats patterns in Kessel.
Travelling on rails- dealt with above, but not your problem
The short oval gunboat- there is one ship in kessel that flies on a really short oval pattern.Probably not the one you mean, but tricky to deal with when you're not in a turreted ship with a gunner. I generally avoid this fellow unless I've got a gunner, but using a methos similar to what I outline below might work.
The Leftovers- Leftovers are the remains of a corvette spawn that someone didn't kill all of. Most often two tightly circling gunnies consistently looping and providing cover fire for each other, but I have often seen a single leftover, or leftovers plus escort fighters. If some naughty person destroys a corvette and not the excort, you get these. If you want a 'vette to spawn, these must die. There is only one safe way to take care of them. Similar to the fly behind at 550m method, you watch the pattern from a safe distance, and just where the point of the loop closest to you is. fly about 550m from where the gunbots circles close to you, stop dead. Plink at the closer ship each time it loops around until its dead. If they fire back, you're too close (obvious). I normally hate taking advantage of the range differential (feels cheesy especially when using legitmate blindspots means faster kills), but in the case of a bugged spawn, I don't hesitate.
From your description, I would guess it was the short oval pattern one. When I first entered Kessel, there was one not far from me with 3 NPCs attacking it. I joined in and did some damage but then the NPCs died and I hauled away. Came back a few minutes later and it suddenly poofed (like it Hyperspaced) and I was given kill credit, faction, and cash for, which I thought was really odd. Without 2 minutes the one I was talking about appeared. about 2k away from where this was and started flying in a general area. It was not a Vette Leftover and it was definitely not on rails. It did turn, but it might have turned on a short rail pattern of circles, I didn't watch long enough. This one definitely rolled completely over to protect its belly no matter where I approached from; however, I swear I also thought I turn this pitch over to bring its nose onto my path of attack as well.
Ah well, thanks all. I'll ignore them for the time being till I finish my master missions.
