First of DO NOT buy a Scyk. The freebee ship the trainer gives you will get you through all your missions BETTER than a crap component loaded Scyk. The freebee ship has always been "mystery meat" since you can't see what's in it, but it will get you through to tier 1 just fine and in fact seems way more powerfull than it did to me when I flew it in Beta.
Once you do reach tier one you should be able to train both Spaceships and Components (MUST ee your first two choices. Roid/FC is useless until T1.) . Go up in your starting ship and kill Hutt Pirates just outside the station for abut an hour and a half and you'll have enough exp points to get two choices come training time for T1. Thepirates areeasy kills and drop enough parts that by the time you get to to T1 you'll be able to outfit a decent Dunelizzard.
To get through the missions without dieing there are a couple of basic tricks. Pracitise them in free space before taking your missions.
1.) The MOTHER of all tips. DISABLE the engines of your opponent! Always and everytime. Now and in the future. NEVER go for the kill until all attackingshipshave been disabled. Both in mssions and out. Once accomplished go clean them up. Cycle through the componets with the [ and ] key. You only need to use one. On your first opponents - Hutt Pirates - there are only three possibilities. Engines, Reactor, or nothing. Engines have less armor. Take them out first.
2.) On the infamous "Transport Escort" mission. Never kill a single attacker. Disable them and let them float. If you turn a second too long to pursue, the transport will get too far out front and get wacked before you can get back to it. You are not graded on this mission by the kills .. only that the Transport makes it. There will be five waves of attackers. You have to disable them all. Being in place to intercept the next coming wave is critical. As they come at you start your turn to back to the Transport just ahead of them passing you.
3.) You mustcommit tomemory the cycle keys. Such as "target closest enemy" and "last enemy that shot at you", also set a key in mapping under controls keymapper for "target under reticule. "
4.) It's hard not to do, but try to keep the spray and pray to a minimum. I do it all the time myself. If you can't break yourself of the habit, the trick is to get a "weapons capacitor" that has a 23ish or greater recharge time, and a weapon that has less than 20 energy use. Lower the better. My current set up results in being able to hold the trigger down all day and never run out of juice.
5.) On weapons choices, watch those "Dam VS" numbers! They are more important than actual damage. A blaster that posts 500 to 800 damage but only a .46ish vs shields and armor is noticably less effective than a 350 to 500 damage at .68 against those components. Go for either Disruptors - High against Shields or a Blaster at 50/50. Ion Cannons third choice IMHO.
6.) My favorite tip. Get a joystick with at least 7 buttons. More the better. All the keys can be programed from the keyboard to the JS. I use a Thrustmaster Top Gun = Fox 2 Pro - USB port and my hands never leave the thing as all the needed keys are programmed to JS buttons and it features a built in throttle and twist yaw control. Not the best by a long shot but for 20 bucks what you got to loose?
There are other tips and tricks. Other beta players feel free to add yours.
Stay safe up there.
