while playing halo2 last night it struck me that the system that is used on the vehicles in that game might translate to the jtl multiplayer ships too.
In halo2 the passenger firing positions are locked to the direction that the firer is facing (not what the driver is facing).
This could easily be applied to the turrets with modification: I think the turrets should be laterally locked to the gunners viewpoint within their fire arc (90dg or 180dg) but with roll affecting vertical movement and lateral turns more than the gunners fire arc also moving their viewpoint (to stop portside gunners firing on the starboard side). That way the firer would have a less stomach-upsetting experience but would still benefit from a good pilot to keep things steady.
