I'm currently rebel 4443 and trying to complete the final mission on the mission branch (it's the one where your consumed with level 4 tie fighters). Can the mission be soloed or is a group a must? If so, what would be the ideal ship to use? I have a xwing and a ywing (prefer the y wing due to it's mass..stopped using the xwing a while back). Any assistance / strategies would be appreciated

My friend and I did this one together. I was a 4433 Privateer in a Rihx and he was in his X-Wing. It wasn't too hard with just the two of us. Much easier than on his own as I mainly kept TIEs off of his tail.

Use the ship that turns the fastest, as soon as your rear shields start to get shot at TURN ROUND! The fighters break off their attack buying you some time. At same time, tab to target closest ship, concentrate on that until rear shields start geting hit again, carry on like that, its "Doable".
If you concentrate on blowing one ship up at a time its likely to get you killed by the others.
But better still would be to bring someone along on a similar tier (or more) to yourself.

use an awing. get a mkII reactor, your lvl6 reward engine, a mkIV craftedshield, a looted lvl2 cap, a mkIV crafted gun, a decent droid interface, and whatever armor/booster you can fit around that.
load up a lvl4 flight computer with engine overload 3, reactor overload 3, weapon overload 3, cap overload 3, and cap to shield shunt 4.
you should be able to solo up to master with that.

What squadron are you? There are 3 squadrons per faction, and the missions are different depending on which squadron you are, so I can't give you strategies on that specific mission.
Anyway a general guide is have some imp and neutral droid programs (rebels sucks), like Weapon-Overload3, Capacitor-Overload 3 (or 4), and Capacitor-to-Shield-Shunt (enables you to heal your shields).
Grouping also really helps with Tier-4 missions.

In reference to the imp flight computer programs, what's the duration of the program once it's been activated? If I select weapons overload during battle, do I have to click on it repeatidly during combat or only once during my flight session?
I'll find out what squadron im on but to describe the mission, the first part consists of assisting the destruction of a gunboat with several tie fights and it's followed by a mission where I need to provide cover to b-wings that are hyperspacing out of the region

It stays on until you either land, repair, set weapons to normal (you'll need that program uploaded as well), or die.

You don't grind xp for master. You just do 2 missions. The kill 30 TIEsmission and the Corvette mission.
