my free look does not work. if i'm not mistaken, i'm supposed to hold down the Insert button?
nothing happens, and the insert key seems to be the only key that would represent "Ins" as instructed in the booklet 
can anybody help me out?

LOL. The numlock isn't free look, it's camera lock by default, and you don't have to hold it down.
Target a friend or enemy and hit numlock (camera lock) and fly by them. You'll notice your head (camera) will be locked on your target while still being able to steer your ship.
Hit it again to turn it off and look forward again.
I use this to track distant mobs or do a quick glance at a bogey, as opposed to using the rear view.

Moricky is correct. Took me awhile to figure that out an asked and no one knew and then I saw the Ins above the 0 and it worked.
