I tested the game on and off as a Rebel pilot since mid-September. The game's gone through a lot of changes just in that time alone -- not so much in terms of the visuals but mainly in terms of making gameplay go from somewhat sucky to quite great.
I had the best time ever being in a multi-person group -- it's harder than it would seem, to keep a large ship running well. And it's harder than it seems to be shooting down ships from the turret when someone else is flying.
I absolutely love the configurability of the ships -- almost nobody will be flying the same exact ship, and there's enough differentiation between chasses to make different playstyles possible (I want a light maneuvarable ship, but I want shields, so I have to compromise and not include a booster, and maybe only one set of armor, plus a smaller blaster... someone else might want the biggest ship ever with giant weapons and super shields, but of course they'll have no fun at all trying to shoot at fast moving ships since their craft is much slower... yet another person will have a lower-end ship chassis with some high-end looted component: you would totally underestimate their strength by just looking at their ship until they shoot at you.). On top of that, the tradeoff between reverse engineering and just using a component that you find is something that every person will have to think about: you find some nice stuff in space from time to time.
I found the NPC AI to get progressively harder as you became better at your piloting profession, and I really liked the (limited but existent) integration with the ground game.
Overall, JtL -- at least in beta -- was a great experience!

I am glad you had a great experience! I am looking forward to flying my own ship in space.

not a space shooter myself, but I hate shuttles, and I think just flying around and looking at stuff will be fun. An occasional fight may give me a taste for really trying the whole space fighting thing.
