Thread: Macros in JTL???

I have heard rumors of several different macros running around for JTL. Like a macro for shipwrights to AFK craft items with experimentation and macros to check for enemy players. Even a macro for autofollow and missle shots when the target glows.

Is it me or do these macros hurt JTL? I know the autofollow doesnt work so hot. One rebel did try it on me and I nailed him with /bomberstrike2. He ended up firing and autofollowing the wrong target. Gave me time to move in behind and show him how missles are really meant to work. hehe.

Anyway I digress. The DEVs said they were limiting or removing macros from the game. They need to start with JTL. In any FPS, using macros is considered very contraversial. One man's macro is another man's cheat. While some macros in FPS are harmless, like autobuying gear before a match, there are some, like the autotarget that are clearly cheats. I would hate to see these forums turn into a cheat proclaimer board like CS was for a long time.

Ya'lls input?

Generally I think Fight macros suck. They take away from the fun of fighting. And give a disadvantage to those who either don´t know how to do macro´s themselves or that just don´t use them cuz they consider them cheats (wich they arent but not far away from it ).

Crafting macros however I tollerate. Many crafting stuff is fudging (i mean the stronger word but this board won´t let me type it *lol*)boring And if you have 2 chars and wanna craft with one and fight with the other then macros come in handy for crafters.

But that´s just my 2 (euro) cent´s

I don't see how you can make a macro to fire missles when you get a lock but you could have something which tries to fire constantly, this would be a little cheat-like but i don't see it as any different than me holding down the missle button whilst I am trying to find a lock.

I do have a few macros in space - one to drop my speed to the best turning rate (non-looping) and a few to /findf certain friends so that I don't have to keep doing the command when trying to locate them, another targets my most common wingman and follows them.

Does follow work on other players during PvP? if so this should be removed IMHO

I assume that like /matchspeed there are targeting commands which u could use to scan around for players and npc's but then what difference is there between this and hitting tab/whatever ? infact it may be more work as you have to dump when you get a target or you will go past it and then have to shift-target or something.

I don't think there is a major benfit to macros, as you say in your post someone tried using a 'combat' macro on you and it hardly helped them - as JTL is all about skill with your chosen input method relying on macros will most likely remove their awareness of what is happening - like in your case with therebel scum! (good job btw

I use a few simple macros in JtL, but I don't consider it to be anything game-breaking. In fact, I use them as a way to compensate for the relatively clunky interface when in space. First off, I have a macro for a few common hyperspace points. This saves me a lot of time if I am in trouble and need to hyper out in a hurry, since using the hyperspace menu takes time, and causes me to STOP flying my ship.

I also re-macroed most of my skills so that I let the rest of my group know that I am using them. Emergency Shields is a good example of this, because when you use it, your guns go offline. I feel it's important to let my group know that they CANNOT count on me to be firing during that time period, so I have a macro something along the lines of:

/gc I just lost my shielding! I am using Emergency Shields. Guns are going offline. . .;
/eshields

I have a similar macro for IFF Scramble. Mostly I use these because flying and typing at the same time is more or less a joke, and I need to hit these sorts of macros the most when I have absolutely NO time to stop and type a message out to my group. My macros don't really get much more complex than that, though.

It just occurred to me just now upon reading this thread, that for those who have slower ships, you could easily set up a repeating macro to maximize booster effectiveness. Basically time how long your booster takes to fully recharge, then keep using it repeatedly. That would be useful when you have a long jump to make within the same sector...

It would be convenient for traveling long, boring distances, yes. But I don't suspect I would use it any other time than that. Certainly not in combat. I've found that getting the most out of my Longprobe is a matter of precision boosting as much as it is precision rolling.

What are the names of the HS points? I have tried working it out but no luck, i am probably making it too complex but the /hyperspace stuff in the TRE files looks pretty complex

The auto follow one is for ships not in combat yet. You target the ship and get the guy to agree to duel you. Just before he accepts you click the macro. You will now follow him even after he engages you in combat.

Most macros I've seen used in space are slower than human twitch skills. I don't use them because I do much better on my own.

I use "/target xxxxxx" and change them to a couple people in the group, especially the person that has the mission. Makes it quick to find a group mate.

The missile macro is a novel idea but why not just hold down your missile fire button?

I'm not able to follow anything accept friendly ships. Even the neutral ships that need to be escorted are now unfollowable.

Since it takes me like 10 minutes to get to a landing station with my yacht I usually use my crafting macro to grind chef. Is crafting while flying a bug?

One thing I would be interested in seeing is how difficult it is to hit a ship that is using a /throttle macro to rapidly vary it's speed around the sweet spot.
