So I was thinking the other day how space is a really cool place, but there's really no reason to compel people to be there. Mining is going to change this to some extent, but I was thinking beyond that a bit. I was wondering how could would it be if miners had to be Overt to mine, and thus would have to seek out protection and safety from either Merc Fighter Squadrons for Hire or from their guild or faction friends. It would add a serious level of tension and fun to the game, as well as something player created that added to immersion (Well, I wanna go mining, I'm gonna have to contract out that famed Merc fighter squadron to be able to make a buck in this sector). It'd be cool, better resources, better pay for all, higher danger, etc, etc...........
Of course, this will never, ever happen, cause one guy will be like "I like to mine alone, have no friends, and hate combat...." Still, man, wouldn't that add some damn cool immersion to space? As well as giving pilots like myself more of a point.

There was another thread recently about using mining to make otherwise unwilling players become content for PVPers: Clicky. It's quite long, but it's worth a read if you're interested.

Not to mention the Y-8 is massive and if you have ever been in a multi-player ship in a real PvP situation it is already hard enough. You are in something about 5-8 times the size of a YT-1300. That's one big target with only 2 turrets.

We still don't know all the details about the expansion. If the devs are smart, they'll up the stats on most of the POB components. If they're even smarter, they'll give the POB ships extra damage mitigation in pvp. Something to make it so that the ships die as fast as they do in PvE, as well as PvP; it should be about 30 direct hits or so without shunts and such, and a good pilot with shunts and a full crew will be able to stay alive like that indefinately, which means that they'll need more than one fighter to take em down. This looks to be the best way to quickly beef up POB ships without rebalancing the entire damage system.

Space Mining is a cool idea, but the combat part of it is kinda tricky, but without it, mining would be way too easy. I am working to get Ace pilot before May 5th, so I can have a nice huge mining ship!
Should be fun.

I don't like the idea of forcing anyone to PvP, regardless of how much it would improve space pvp. Let miners be miners, they are going to be in enough trouble with NPCs after them in that big old hulking ship =) The best way to increase space pvp is to make some reward for it, from something as simple as a rnaking system to something as advanced as sector control.
