This sounds like an interesting concept. Certainly, it would help extend the sytem of GCW planet control into JTL.
Perhaps faction control could manifest in the form of an associated capital ship appearing over the controlled system (or more than one for the dual-planet sectors). For the Imperials, this would obviously be a Star Destroyer. For the Rebs......maybe a Frigate like the one over Endor? A Mon Cal Cruiser? Something to think about.
The ships would be an obvious and formidable force in space, but would not obstruct the space station. This would serve to allow traffic so important to the game's economy to move (mostly) unhindered. The Space Stations, however, would charge a landing fee (not high, maybe only around 1000-10000 credits depending on sector) to members of the opposing faction. Of course, to prevent bypassing this via the Travel System this fee would also be applied to public transport and direct Travel. Perhaps the Stations should be patrolled by a high number of the controlling faction's starfighters to ensure "no funny business." The level of these ships would also be dependent purely on sector.
And perhaps the capital ships in the sky (currently a trio of Star Destroyers) could change accordingly as well? Maybe to the CORRECT number as well?

OK.. lame title, I know.. but here are some ideas.. may have been suggested before, maybe not.
I think they should add the ability to blockade a planet. Say, the Rebels get X number of ships (multiplayer and single), and group them around the planets station for a certain amount of time (have an option to initiate a blockade in comms), in order to blockade that planet. During the blockade, only members of the side that are doing the blockade can shuttle or travel to and from the planet. Other factions would have to fly normally, but would be TEF'd automaticly when nearing the station, so they would have to evade/fight their way through the blockade in order to get there. Also, as the blockade progresses, have the other factions NPCs on the planet slowly subside, transfering primary control over that planet to the blockading side. This would allow more player control over the galaxy as a whole.
Another idea is for larger multiplayer ships, say, corvette sized or so, or even spacestations.. maybe 5-8 levels, with many rooms. These could operate as mobile PA Halls or even cities. They would stay around while the owning player is logged off, they could grant pilot rights to others, the ship could have their own hangers for fighters, etc. The owner could "Rent" rooms to players, as houses (could count against their building limit), or stores. They could work like player run cities shuttleports, so there's a tax to fly to and from them with shuttles. There would probably need to be another "planet" listing in the spaceport/shuttle dropbox, for player run capital ships, or someway for players to know what system each ship is in.
Of course, they should be very hard to come by... needing LOTS of resources (say, 1 ship being comprised of 8 sections, each requiring 200k+ of metals, 100k+ of polymer/fiberplast, etc). This would prevent a mass amount of ships, though there's a lot more room in space than on planets. They would work as ships, however, and be pilotable (slow and hard to maneuver though), have turrets (can be automated, like base turrets, or manually controlable). This would open up the possability of really really big space battles, with capital ships launching fighters, having slower tracking turbolasers firing at each other, etc.
So what does everyone thing.. sound like good ideas?
