No, you don't need the XP for the Master/Ace pilot box. Yes, you do need to grind the XP for the fourth tier boxes. Your tier 4 trainer has 4 storyline missions - one per skill box. When you have done all 4 he sends you to speak with an Admiral (or Grand Admiral depending on your faction/preference). The (Grand) Admiral has two missions for you, the second of which is the Corvette.

Actually, there are a couple of missions between getting 4444 and getting the Vette mission. One is from your Tier 4 Trainer and is referred to as the 'exit mission.' The other is the '30 kills' mission is must be done in one session in Kessel. I believe running both of them with friends is usually recommended, especially for people running through their first Pilto profession.

I keep hearing that you don't have to grind the xp for the master mission or even the fourth tier boxes. I've wondered about this but my Trainer keeps giving me different missions. Can I just get the vette mission? Is there another mission between 4444 and the vette?
