Is it worth it? and do you know a bigtime difference using one instead of your keyboard?
I know its a dumb question, but alot of my PC games use keyboard and there is really no need for a Joystick.
But may pick one up, but spending $20 bucks on a cheapee joystick is alot of Happy Hour money.

IMHO it's more then worth it. Get a good one with a throttle and programmable buttons if you are going to do it.

I got a Microsoft Sidewinder for my Windows xp system, and it really helps you improve your kills. I see it as a big help for anyone, from newbies to veterans.

I'm using a Logitec Wingman Extreme 3d, its very much worth it imo. I dont understand how anyone can play these kinds of games with a mouse, especially since you have throttle and 7 buttons..
If you are seriously about any kind of sim you always need a decent joystick. Sidewinder or Wingman are probablythe best ones (that are reasonable).
The only reason there is no reason for a joystick for the most part now a days is because the big companies like Atari and EA have destroyed the Space Sim/Flight Sim genre to almost nonexistance simply because they want to release 50 different Warcraft and Quake clones.

I'm using the Saitek X45 joystick/throttle.
I admit, I rather like flight sims to begin with, but this joystick is great. Heavy (doesn't move around on your desk), excellent placement and amount of buttons (grand total of 4 top hats, 2 wheels, 6 buttons on joystick, 2 on throttle, roll bar on throttle, 2 mode switches, one of which can be used to totally remap the whole joystick (grand total of 24 buttons, virtually)) and very comfortable.
Well worth the $70 I spent on it when it came out

The severe decline in the number of space sims seems to have had an effect in the availability in joysticks here in Denmark anyway. I went to ten different stores in the second largest city in the country - I found *one* shop that had a single model in stock (Logitech's cordless model - cannot recall the name). Gamepads and wheels/pedals everywhere though (most of them for Xbox and PS2 of course).
I ordered a Logitech Force 3D in a netshop and I am hoping I will have it Saturday at the latest. Currently playing with a Logitech RumblePad, and even if it is far better than keyboard and mouse, I still find it too much of a strain to use the small thumb sticks in fast dogfights.
And after having tried what racing games are like with a force feedback wheel, I decided not to skip out on force feedback on the joystick either. The effects in JtL seem a bit weak (actually they only work occasionally with my pad), but I found X-Wing Alliance hidden in the back of one of my closets
Get a joystick (force feedback or not) for space/flight sims. Only sane recommendation.
