Hello,
I posted a message earlier, and my followup got missed, and didn't really relate to the topic. Apologies for a similar post...
Having not explored space much at this point, I'm not exactly clear how one goes about acquiring newer ships and upgrades. A friend is considering picking up JTL, but is under the impression it'll take months for him to really get a ship other than the starter ship. In my other post, someone suggested there's another way to get more advanced ships, so I'm curious if someone can tell me how that works. Thanks!

Oh no. The starter ship is just to get you started. In fact, you can get a tier 0 crafted ship right away, although I suggest keeping you starter until you reach 1/1/1/1 (whichis easy to train considering you don't have to have xp, just complete the missions).
Then, after that, always train your 2nd box first, i.e. 1211, then 2211. Get the component skill first.

So, when someone is ready to move into a new ship, though (tier 0 or otherwise), what will that cost them (as far as credits...)

That will require some shopping around. Then, when you find your shipwright, stick with him.
Tier 1 ships, 50k
Tier 2 ships, 90k
Tier 3 ships 150k or so
Tier 4 ships 300k or so
Master ships 500k or so.
Tier 1 and 2 ships pretty much all are that price. The prices become more diverse the farther up the tree you get.
