Thread: A gripe about the planets

I like to avoid posting rants on the forums, but this time I think I'll make an exception.I think the devs did a great disservice to the exploration aspect in JTL by making the planets fixed in size and position, with no hope of flying closer or farther away from them. Just think of the opportunities it would have created if it were possible to fly between planets in the same sector--you could fly directly from Naboo to Rori, or fly around the numerous planets/moons in the Tatoo systemwhere they could have hidden some nice POIs. As it is right now, although the sectors are fairly bigin size there is really no sense of having travelled anywhere because the backdrop is always the same. The only really thing distinguishing one point in space from another is maybe a base or a nebula.

I even have canonical evidence that a ship could fly from one planet to another (without hyperdrive)in a realistic span of time--look at how Queen Amidala's ship flew from Naboo to Tatooine in Episode 1, the rebels flew from Yavin 4 to the Deathstar (beyond Yavin) in Episode 4, and Han flew all the way from Hoth to Bespin in Episode 5. So obviously the scale of the galaxy wasn't a big issue.

You may alsobe wonderingwhy I am bringing this up now after both beta and release, but I did mention the same point a couple months ago. Sadly I don't think the devs took notice. It may not be possible to do anything now, but if it were, I hope the devs reevaluate the current model to incorporate in-depth system exploration.

You must have acrappy computer to gripe about it, why fly somewhere which would take like a total of 10 mins of space flying, when you canjust chose hyperspace which takes aprox. 4 seconds to get to any planet of your choice, hmm?

I'm not sure why you think the kind of computer I have has anything to do with my complaint...

what I mean is you should also be able to fly up to planets that you can't normally land on, like those other 5 planets in the Tatooine system. Of course you could choose to hyperspace to them if you want, it would be optional just like you can take a shuttle on the ground. But you inadvertently made another good point, why should travel between two places be so short? Exploration is more satisfying if it is more difficult to get to a destination.

I also think it would be pretty cool to do that...just for the novelty factor, though. It might be more satisfying to fly from one planet to another for the first time...maybe the second time....but the 83rd time? 357th time? Hell, my Swoop isn't fast enough for me on the ground lol Sure is better than walking like the good ole days....

I'm sure the devs figured that few people would care about it. Also, it would take time they could spend on something else to put in that feature. While it would be neat, most people wouldn't use it and it would be a waste of developer resources.

Alot of people would appreciate being able to "Explore." The way it went was (based on beta information, i have not purchased JTL yet) you talked to your quest giver, he gave you the quest, you went into space, you completed your quest, and returned to the quest giver for another... Wheres the game in that? (straying from the point...) if i wanted to do quests, i'd jus talk to the nobles/citizens/bothan spy net/random quest giving npc's in a city and do their lame quests becuase it's all the same. I will not pay30 bucks for another theme park quest set. Back to the point however, exploration is a MAJOR part of the game to alot of the customer base here in SWG. Many people are not PvP'ers and base their play styles around exploring and hunthing (myself included). Why should i purchase a game that only offeres simple random spawn pve and pvp areas? The dev team has failed to produce a quality product that appeals the the entire crowd of SWG players.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I think that game spoiled me by raising my expectations from a space flight sim. I likely wouldn't have written this post if I hadn't played that game...

I dont know why JTL was made to be 90% PvP/PvE. Dont get me wrong, I find it very enjoyable, but I do agree being able to orbit planets and what not, and being able to fly from one moon to another would be fun at times. I doubt it would be possible to implement a feature like this now, but if they did I think JTL would even go another notch higher.

If the devs can add a substantial trading & exploration system to JtL I'll be a very happy chappy.

Add the function of having to avoid Imperial patrols while smuggling spice, and it would be even BETTER
