I'm new to JTL, and was just wondering about these shields i Looted. It says something likefront shield hitpoints and backshield hitpoints 0.0/300, but the regular shields just say 300/300. is that normal? is there something needs to be done to the looted shields before i equip them?
also, I just started as privateer, and all I've been doing is the missions. A couple times I felt like I was getting pounded by those Black Sun guys, but I didn't have any damage to my ship? Is that normal? I guess I should be happy, pretty soon I'll probably get pulverized.

Yes that is normal. The first number is the current shield level and the second number is the max shield level. When you go into space, you will see that you have no shields and it will start to recharge. Once the recharge is complete, your shield bars [middle bottom of the screen above and below your radar] should be blue. If you look at the stats again, it'll be 300/300 instead of 0/300.

Duh sorry; couldn't find the edit. As to your second question. You sure will feel like you are gettin pounded on quite a lot. The important thing to look at is your shield indicators; if they are all gone on either the front or the back, it will start to eat into your front or back armor [the red little curves above and below the blue shield curves]. This isn't great, but it does happen. When it starts to get bad is when the red curve disappears as well... it will start to damage your internal components [engine, weapon, etc.] and the chassis points of your ship. When those components start to get damaged, the right-hand of your HUD will flyout a little and say something like "75% Prototype Engine" etc. This isn't good.
Also, if you listen closely when you are being pounded, as it penetrates deeper, you'll notice a difference in the sound effects [listen as you hit other ships, you'll hear it too].
