Thread: Joystick Suggestions

A friend of mine suggested to me the Saitek Cyborg Evo. I do like it a lot. Being a left hander and the fact that a majority of the joystick products out there are engeneered specifically for right handers limits my choices. If it's a consideration for you the cyborg is truly ambidextrous in design.

saviek cyborg ($30-$40)is good if you need allot of custimization for the feeling on the stick. Saviek x45 ($70-$90)is good if you have tiny hands and enjoy over spending. I use the Logitiech Extreme 3d pro which works better for me then the other two i mentioned (and tried/returned to store). I thinkI bought it for about $30 at bestbuy, worth every penny.

Features you want:

Twist handle (you really want this, trust me)

A decent throttle control on the stick

A pov hat (not needed but a nice feature)

a few easyly accesable buttons on the sticks base (to bind with droid commands, differtn targeting commands, or whatever else you find you use allot)

I'm new to flight sim games, and I'm wondering if anybody can suggest a good joystick, or let me know what sorts of things I'm looking for in a joystick. Are the "rumble" joysticks useful for JTL? Is that a feature with this game?

Yeah Throttle control is the most important aspect for me. Like the former post above me, my hand also gets tired too. The X45 is a little to pricey for me, should I even bother getting a joystick with a price range of 30 dollars?

i am also interested in a joystick.... i have been playing with a mouse and my hand gets tired but the joystick i have doesent seam to work properly it eather it wount go to 0 like on the throttle or it wount go to 100% how is the software suport?

This might be the result of your sensitivity settings in game or in the windows control panel settings. If you have one of those silly force feedback POS, I would suspect a mechanical malfunction or limitation.

I use a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 1 and I love it. Pity they stopped making joysticks.

I agree that stick throttle is awful, so I leave mine cranked up and use the keyboard to run my throttle. My girlfriend has an X52 and I'm not sure, as cool as it is, that I'm comfortable with the fully dedicated heavy throttle control quite yet.

My experience with controls of any kind is you get what you pay for. I would say no to the $30 stick and no to anything that has been used.

Thrustmaster has a nice offering. it is a left hand throttle right hand stick. It doesn't have the quantity of buttons and options the x52 but it beats a 4 button stick with throttle built on.

From what I have seen in similar threads the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro is fairly popular. It has the throttle on the stick base but it also has 12 buttons twist handle... basically everything you need. I haven't used it yet but I will probably get one this weekend.

BTW It is under $30 at most places.

From one who's adapted well to a speedpad/mouse, I still look wistfully at sticks from time to time. When I was last considering them, the x52 wasn't compatable with JTL. Still, all the ones I've seen on a shelf have been just that... on a shelf..

Can anyone think of which stores / chains might actually have one set up to demo?

Thanks.

Probably CompUSA or Circuit City.

I personally have tried many joysticks, logitec, the saitek sd90 and the x52. the d90 is nice if you have to travel and need a portable as the legs fold up and out of the way. But, the x52 is awesome in that you can set three modes and each can be programmed for different ships and commands.

The separate throttle is great as i use one of the buttons to target engines/reactor or whatever and another button to fire missiles. on the joystick i use the 1/15 trigger button to fire weapons 1 and 2 and if I fly the x-wing i use button five all easy to grab. To target the enemy there are two buttons on the joystick I can use to target next target and one to targe unter retenile. There is also another button or trigger under the guard that i use to fire counter measures. oh yeah i use one of the buttons on the throttle to target who in the heck every hit me.

During battle I only have to use the keyboard if i'm using the function keys but i'm sure if i take the time i could program them too into the remaining 4 or five buttons left.
