My first experience with this was while doing a duty mission in tier IV. I was just about to the WP, when I got attacked by eight Tier IV Blacksun light fighters.
They ambushed (I ignored them since I couldn't attack them when the player with the mission was in the sector, but they attacked me once he left or died) me and took out nearly all of my rear shield and armor on my Awing in one volley.
I decide, "Ok, try to catch me." I hit the afterburner ('er, "booster") on my engine with max speed of 92+. I watch my speed climb to 1204, and these guys were CATCHING UP WITH ME! An Awing with the best engine available to a player AND a maximum speed with booster.
I surely hope that this was a bug due to trying to speed up player engines.
Of note, I killed six of them (I can still turn inside of them as they do their joust), seriously damaged one, then they either took off at 1500 or hypered out of the area.

I have no problem with the enemy ships being fast. But I do get upset when they drop a Level 5 engine with 56 speed after they outran my A-Wingflying at nearly 1200.

NPC speed doesn't make much of a difference the AI is poor most of them just spin around you and do hit and run. only ships that seem to be a problem are a-wings and interceptors.
Engine loot drops should really reflect the npc ship speed (wish the same was for ground weapons blacksuns on the ground use a 850-2000 damage 2 handed axe)

I was noticing Oppressors in Kessel last night streak out of weapons range, stop on a dime, turn and then run back in head-on. I'd turn in advance in order to come up cleanly behind for a tail only to watch the Opressor disappearing out in front of me... it would again stop on a dime, turn and then run back-in. Took me forever to beat him, it was a boring joisting match in my A-Wing set to Extreme shield forward and Ihad myfinger on the trigger as he came running in... repeat. The AI tweak make it a bit more challenging but I'm of the thought that the speed tweak is a "little" two much... having a medium attack craft being able to easily overspeed my A-wing, the apparent fastestand most manoveurable vessel in the galaxy(92.2 engine, boosts to 1246).doesn't make a lot of sense.

Seems it was too diffcult to design a goodNPC AI so the devs just made them insanely fast now.
