I decided to be a privateer instead of a imp pilot was that a mistake?

I love it, personally. But you have to be the type that loves a challenge, as the ships are not easy to work with. And, if you do love a challenge, do the Smuggler's Alliance branch, as it's the most difficult Privateer branch, RSF is the easiest.

Additionally, the content of the smuggler's alliance missions is pretty good.
Unfortunately, the way JTL is designed, if I want to try anything else out, I need to start over

Privateer ships are really easier to use than imperial ships, imo.
If you are imperial and planning on flying with a lot of imperials on missions, you might consider going rsf, as they are factionally alligned. Not sure about Smugglers', but CorSec pilots can get aggro from bomber strikes even when they are grouped with the imps that call em.

Privateer is nice, has goods and bads just like the others. I did RSF so i can kill the lame Tier 5 rebs in Kessel for easy exp, without the imps agroing me
