I started in Bestine with the Storm Squadron and I recently took a one month break. Now I think I am going to start my Imperial missions over just for fun. Does it really matter which group I join? Is one funner than the other or they all about the same?

Im in storm squad. It's alright, cept the missions get really harder and longer as you progress. Inq. Squad sounds cool since you get to work out of the retreat, but i think u need the imp merit badge to work there.

Imperial Inquisition - Easy

black epsilon has cool backstory (covert ops, new galaxy order type stuff), but i didn't like the 4 missions for all of tier 2, endless duty missions. i believe the inquisitor squad had more tier 2 missions (made it to tier 4 inquisit in beta).

Just a warning the last Tier 3 mission in Black Epsilon is really tough. You have to take out 3 gunboats. The last one has three turrets and even though it's Tier 4 will chew up anybody good. I brought a friend he was Tier 4 in an Advance he got blown up in about a minute and he had been soloing gunboats in Kessel. The Kathaak Queen or something. It's a nasty one.

Soloing non-mission gunboats doesn't compare to those found on missions.
The NMGs have no AI, thus you can sit inside their turret blind spot and hammer away without consequence. The MGs have AIs and will actively engage you with missiles and turrets.
There aren't three gunboats - just one. The other two are Nova Cruisers - the first one is nice enough to never roll, so you can get beneath it rather quickly and take out the tutrets, then deal with the escorts before going back to disable it for the escort run.
The second one is an engage and destroy run, and this Nova twists and turns, making it a little more difficult...
Then you have the Queen. Not only can this thing eat you for lunch, but if you wander too far away from the ship, it'll hyper out, failing the mission...so no emergency in-system jumps, unless you want to fail... :/

That epsilon mission is crazy fun!
I did a tier exit mission for a rebel friend last night in my kryat on tempest and it did have 3 imperial gunboats right at the first leg of the mission. Flying straight into the face of three gunboats all firing missiles at you is one scarey proposition, but I discovered I can avoid a lot of them flying at 1450 speed!
With my imp on scylla, I joined SS out of dumb luck for having logged in bestine the night before. I am finally progressing again with him and will finish out SS, just so I can say I did, but ultimately I think I will fly for the Inquisition for the retreat access and to be as close as I can get to vader and the emp. Seems to me an Imperial player city near the retreat is now very enticing...or maybe just a house or two.
edit:
Q: Where do Inquisition Aces get their tier 4 duty missions?

i joined inquistion simply because i was on naboo at the time, and i already had the emp retreat badge or whatever (which is required to finish the inquisition), that is what makes inquisition hard, otherwise the missions are all soloable even the corvette can be soloed as an imperial (bstrike2 is all i gotta say), as far as all the gunboats go you have to hurry up and disable the reactor or engine while bstrike has it's atttention then hyper to the space port or whatever for reparis and kill the escort there while continually repairing as necessary, then go back to where you left the gunboat and disable all the weapons while you send in another bstrike team to keep it busy, also you must use the tie-bomber if you want to solo all of your missions as it is the only one that can take the necessary beating on the final teir 4 gunboat mission.

Is there some secret plan to repeat this nonsense often enough that it might become true again
Imp inquisition pilots can do a simple mission to unlock the ability to land and launch from the retreat AND access all of the retreat (for the last part a quick conversation with the pilot outside of the retreat just right of the entrance is needed after successfully completing the mission).
About the initial question "So which Imperial Group do most people join?": I personally think it's pretty even between the inquisition and storm squadron and for reasons unknown to me less people picking black epsilon (this naturally is based on a completly unrepresentative base, the people I happen to know in the game. The real numbers might quite likely be completly different).

well I helped a friend with all his BE squad missions, that was the most fun I have had in a ship, I am a inquistor master pilot, I have a an alt who is going to do the BE squad, it was really hard but alot of fun to do...plus the black ops mystic really works in for role playing...the missions are equally hard just different elements to it...the Dathomir misions for the inq..were the most fun....battles and battles and more battles..the yt in the last mission, omg that thing pissed me off something terrible....
you can db all guns and then the motor and the darn thing would blow up...no matter which squad you fly for you will get frustrated unless you know a few masters in any faction, i will say if you want a easy ride go privateer...I have solo'd every mission through tier 4333...good luck
