...And I'm on my way to Yavin 4. Since I started at Mos Espa, I can't take my starter ship with me. So my question for you guys is, should I get another Z-95 because I know how it handles, or should I buy a Y-Wing with it's added mass?

get a y-wing and it'll last you until you can get an x-wing (that means skip buying a longprobe)

Buy a player-crafted Z-95. The good ones have 15K mass. This is plenty. Cheaper repairs are always good, and it doesn't handle like a turd with low level looted equipment. Think about this for a second...even with your best looted equipment right now, are you over 15K mass? If the answer is no, then buy a Z-95, I know my the mass of my best components at Tier 1 did not exceed about 12K. Don't equip a droid interface, or a missle launcher, you wont need them for the Tier 2 missions. Try to hold out for the Longprobe variant, and the next equipment level box. You will save money, and be much more impressed with the Y-Wing Chassis. Most people I see complaining about the Y-Wing do so because the get the regular variant and equip it with the same components they had in their Z-95. This does not make logical sense. You should only move to the Y-Wing when the mass of your components starts exceeding the 15K allowed by the Z-95.

my sister is a reb and she would say y wing for mas but you have one weapon and missle you can fire. but the same is said for z95. the y wing is a two seater on tier 1 and tier 2 the y wing is a one seater

The z-95s you buy are 12k mass that i've seen which leads me to believe maybe they go up to 15k. At any rate the starter ship would probably beat the crap out of any shipwright built z-95 with that low a mass. I would just go for the y-wing and live with it being a slug for the time being.
