1.. parking a harvester on an asteroid to mine resources form that asteroid (ex: tatooine miner's field)
2.. setting up a scavenger patrol to collect smaller space debris for refinement (ex: rogue droids)
3.. mining ships that do either of the above.. actual mining of large space objects.. or collecting small space debris and junking the non-usable stuff (ex: tatooine miner's field.. do the missions)
from NON-SWG...
Alien.. the 'nostromo' was a deep space mining vessel. it would enter a high orbit around a large gaseous planet (or nebula).. drop a 'hose' into the atmosphere.. and suck up the atmosphere (or nebula gasses) and seperate teh useful stuff from the useless stuf.. holding the useful stuff in tanks and expelling the rest back into the atmosphere
Bespin (Cloud City) works on a similar concept
those are some examples of 'space mining' i'm sure you can use whichever 'take' on it you need for whatever various discussions you're noting it in.. or fudge them altogher.. or whatever need be done..
but pure and simple.. it's mining.. in space..

I think you mis-understood the question.
I don't think he was looking for a definition, more inquiring as to it's mechanics in game.
In other words he's hearing people talk about it as if we can mine in space in game.

ya.. but since it's not 'IN' the game.. i figured i'd explain the concept and let whomever it was use their conceptual knowledge and apply it to the game mechanics as fitted the conversation..
since whoever that is didn't post specific threads i couldn't clarify for any of them..
so i figured a broad answer and whoever's imagination would get the job done just as efficiently
*shrug

Yet your "broad" answer itself seems to suggest that it can be done in game.
...Why are you "roleplaying" on the forums?

??
like i said.. i didn't read whatever posts KanyeW3ST was referring to so i don't know what context to best suit an answer.. thus a broad one seemed to make the most sense..
give KanyeW3ST a solid background on the concept.. and let the implementation come from their own interpretation as needed to each post
i'd guess someone thinks it can be done in game.. i can think of a few ways to implement some form of 'space mining' myself.. it's a reasonable assumption that someone else had mentioned it already which is why KanyeW3ST 'keeps seeing people talk about it'

Gee some people will take anything they can get when they feel like ranting. somerandomuser simply answered the questionin accordance withthe singlesentence that the original poster posted.

I honestly didn't know the function of the Nostromo! I mean, i knew it had to do with mining, but gas mining sounds like it would take a aship that big.

ya i'm not certain of that.. i think it's mentioned briefly in 'Aliens' when they're chewing Ripley out for ruining the ship itself..
*shrug
i do know it was a deep space mingin vessel.. and tend to recall it as a gas miner.. something from 'Alien' makes me think that.. that they used the reactor overload to cause a chain reaction thru the fuel to ignite the cargo if i remember correctly..
thus the logical conclusion.. methane.. hydrogen.. some other big ball of fire gas
