Theres a little pullout keyboard map in your JTL CD set.
Or if you purchased a Keycode theres a Friday Feature somewhere with a printable version...
Have a gander at that.

Is it in the back of the usermanual? I never even bother to read the printedmanual since I assumed it was the same as the the one in the betta forum.

Go to your ingame options menu/controls/keymap/space and you will find every space actionwith an existing keymap or you can'rebind' a new one.
Default for targetting the guy that shot you is 'r'. It usually works very well, but on occassion it will target yourself instead...not sure why, but it is fairly rare.
Targetting nearest enemy also has default keys that work pretty well, though don't always give you the closest enemy first:
t = aggressive npc's
y = non-aggressive npc's (this actually might be 'all targets', as I get stations and agressive mobs and players too)
l and k = players
x = within reticle
c = space stations
think , and . are also mapped for targetting, but I haven't had need to use more than the above funtions.
I'd agree that it's kind of all over the place and doesn't quite funtction perfectly, but the commands are there.
edit: forgot to mention for those that don't know...you can use shift+any of the above and cycle backwards through the same targets. Here again, I do notice sometimes where it doesn't quite keep perfect order as I cycle back and forth, but for the most part it's quite useful.

Those commands aren't listed in the foldout in the back of the manual (I have the CD).
Thanks for letting me know!

I use the ; and the' key to target friendly NPC ships suchs as the ships I need to escort in missions. The Tab key is the default key for targeting nearest enemy NPC ship, and Shift+Tab for nearest enemy player.
