Same rules apply for all three pilot professions:
1) you visit your npc trainer of choice and learn novice as well as get your free newbie ship that can not be upgraded and can not hyperspace(all player crafted ships can automatically hyperspace). There are 3 difference novice trainer options for each pilot professions. For rebels and imperials it determines the squadron you are a member of. For privateers it determines your neutral faction(Hutt, Corsec, RSF).
2) You complete 4 newbie missions in an instanced version of that planets space. Only you and other newbies are in that instanced zone.
3) Upon completing the 4 missions you get to train 1 free skill box and get a clothing reward.
4) Now you need to get xp totrain all your level 1 boxes. You can either randomly go kill stuff or take endless duty missions from your trainer to generate ships for you to kill/escort/etc. Once you get the xp for each level 1 box you can instantly train.
5) After you have all your level 1 boxes you are sent to your level 2 trainer. you complete some intro missions for the level 2 trainer then start working on xp. Once you have enough xp for a level 2 box, your trainer will have you perform a special mission before he will train you.
6) After you get all your level 2 boxes you are sent to your tier 3 trainer. For tier 3 you do not need xp. You simply get a free skill box of your choice after completing a set of complicated missions.
7) After you have your level 3 boxes you are sent to your level 4 trainer. Level 4 works just like level 2 except the xp requirements are higher and the special mission you have to take before you train a box is longer and multi-parted.
8) Once you finish off tier 4, you are then given a master box mission which takes you to the PvP zone of Kessel. There you must complete the task given to you and you become a master of your pilot profession.
Notes:
- Pilot professions take 0 skill points
- After you master you no longer gain xp but instead gain prestigue points that let you access the deep space zone.
- You can only have 1 pilot profession at any one time. If you wish to change pilot professions, you must first surrender all your pilot skills then train as a novice for your new pilot profession(ie switching from neutral to imperial pilot, etc).
- However, each time you start over on a pilot profession, your advancement is accelerated. If you have mastered one pilot profession then choose to try and master a different one, the xp requirements are halved. If you master a second time and try to master yet another pilot profession, it will go 3 times as fast the third time.
- Imperial and Rebel pilots start as covert in space. There is no TEF. You are either covert or overt in space. You switch at factioned space stations while in space.
- you do not have to be imperial or rebel on the ground to be imperial or rebel in space. You will join that side if you are neutral and will appear covert to other members of your faction. But you can not engage in PvP(or be TEFed) on the ground unless you *also* join that side on the ground. The game distinguishes between you being a member of the Navy and Army.

great post SolrFlare
My question...
I started as a Privateer. I started running missions for the Corsec. I completed the first four missions. Can I still switch to the Hutt or RSF missions? Am I stuck as a Corsec? I got a nice gift...not complaining. But, I would like to do the Hutt missions too maybe. Right now I am still finishing xp for the first tier.

Awesome!
But, one thing I can verify, is that the duty missions do indeed have an end! The last wave came (I believe 15 waves), giving me a total of 53k xp and a duty mission complete message! Went and got the duty mission again for the rest of the 7k Ineeded.
Just an FYI!

Yep, I can vouch for this did it, ran a duty mission against the Commerce Raiders, great XP and pretty exiting for about 45 minutes.....
