Thread: The time for collisions has come

One thing I think is missing from space is collisions. Especially now with the release of mining and mining pirates, the skill of the pilot to escape or even defeat opponents by causing them to collide with asteroids, bases, or each other seems like it would really improve the realism of the game up there.
Shields would obviously be impacted first, but then, once depleted, actual damage would occur from hitting *any* object.
How difficult would it be to accomplish this?

IMO that should have been in game from the start, as well as friendly fire. It would require a little more skill, and for that reason may never happen. *whisper* there are a lot of people who really can't fly out there, and will cry to no end if they "kill themself's"

asteroids and the like are all done client side.
since everyone sees them in diff places at diff times, they had to be non destructive...
at least thats the line we got, which does make sense.

As much as I hate to decry any sort of realism, I think friendly fire might be a bit much. Unless there was a way of protecting younger players from those of us you know would prey on them, I think it would do more damage than good. However, if there was a way to sort of police this I would be all for it.

Makes 'sense' but is not realistic.

The amount of calculations required for THAT amount of collesion detecton would be a strain somehwere. EIther the client, server, or network connection in between. Im not sure which, but im quite sure it would cause lag.
But what's more collesion detection, (espeically between players), and friendly fire, is sowing the seeds of alot of greifing in space. How now we can team kill! It would in action make space a PvP enviorment. Something which alot of people can't handle.
