Are there any advantages/disadvantages using a droid instead of a flight computer or flight comp inplace of a droid?

You don't have a choice, you use a droid or flight computer depending on the ship. They are the same though apart from the fact that the droid can move around like any droid while the flight computer is a static object.

...which makes one heckuva paperweight, bought two for my next piloting levels.

Yep, if you're an Imperial, your choices are pretty much flight computer or nothing, unless you get the Actis (aka Jedi) starfighter, and perhaps one or two other ships. Bought my first astromech droids after getting the Jedi, now I've got chirps and beeps in the cockpit for the very first time. Honestly not sure which the Y8 requires, droid or flight computer, guess I'll find out soon when I complete my mining quest.

Flight computer works in the Y-8, I think all of the POB ships use flight computers... Although I always thought it would be a lot mroe helpful to have a few R2's running around repairing the inside of my ship.

An astromech driod counts as of one the 5 droids in your datapad, so when I got a R2 unit for my JSF, I had
to make room for it by destroying one of the existing driods. As for Flight Computers, you can have as many of themas you want as long as you have space in datapad.

...what about programing? do you get a greater capacity for commands with the droids?

All ships are specificaly directed as to which they must use. Some must do droid (x-wing), others a flight comp (tie)

20, 40, 70, 110, 125 and 150 program space for cert 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 astromechs and flight computers. There is no difference in speed, functionality or program space between astromechs and flightcomputers in regards to space. The only difference is that an astromech can hold some other modules to gain functionality in the ground game.
