Thread: Will high pings ruin jtl?

So maybe this has already been covered, and if so please disregard this post.

But I started thinking, I am on the West Coast but made a character on an East Coast Server because it was one of the first ones up and running on launch day. Now, it's laggy, but I hear every one complaining of lag and many that are even on the east coast. Personally, the lag is not so bad as to be a game breaker in the ground portion of Galaxies.

But what happens when jtl launches and I am playing a twitch based game with 200 ping, which is not that uncommon. I know what happens when I play first person shooters in deathmatch...I usually get creamed. That's why I usually look for servers where my ping is about 50 or so. I realize by the way that ping and lag are not the same, but it seems like they do go hand in hand much of the time in my experience.

Also, I have a great cable upload/download speed, 3 ghz pentium, and ati 9800 with a gig of ram, so there is not much that I think I can do to boost performance there.

So if we want to be good at jtl, are we gonna have to transfer our characters to a server where our ping is better, or will/should jtl allow the player to pick the server, which is typical of first person online shooters....

Will jtl have seperate servers from regular ground servers...seems logical that it would to help with this potential difficulty.

They will probably have different servers from ground servers but you won't be able to pick the server you want. In order to maintain consistency, only people from Bria will be able to fly in Bria space and therefore only Bria JTL servers. Ergo, those servers will be wherever the Bria ground servers are and you will have to deal with whatever ping rate you usually have.

Here's another question along those lines. How many people will a zone support? I recall reading somewhere that they can get 32 player ships in a zone. I'm thinking, "32?! Um, there's gonna be a hell of lot more people than that in a zone."

This is something they'll figure out and address in the beta. Planetside could haveI think between 100-200people per "zone". I could be wrong on that though.

The network code will be optimized like planetside twich code ....

It should work on dial up but as long as you have a resonable and consistant ping.

If it's timing out then of course it's gonna have a problem .. but that's a network error not

SOE's fault.

I say broadband only for JTL. Nothing against 56kers but I seriously don't think JTL would run very well for anybody with too many around.

56k-ers wouldn't effect broadband users' performance - other then whatever performance hit occurs due to another player being in the zone. The only thing that may happen is a broadband user would see a 56k-er jumping around a bit.
