Thread: Starships as residences
This is definitely an awesome idea! Many, if not all, would love to get a good look at their spacecraft, sitting in a huge hanger bay, surrounded by scurrying droids hard at work on repairs and general maintenance.
The open access ramp would have to allow movement in and out of the ship,as you have suggested.Players would finally getthe overall visual of the vessel, mist spraying from exhaust vents, exposed landing gear, exterior lighting from small port holes. I can even visualize black fueling ducts running across the hanger floor.
Perhaps a terminal next to the spacecraft would provide management of the vessels components (much like the current spacecraft terminals), payment of hanger bay fees etc, and maybe even some type of missions.
The cut scenes would also be a great visual element that I'm sure we all are dying to see.
Some other additions:
1) Hanger Rental Fees -
Like any real-life hanger the starport would charge a fee for any spacecraft utilizing the hanger for any length of time the vessel would remain at the port. I would think it would be in the same rate as a typical current planetary housing rates. The player can also pay in advance for the time they think the hanger will be in use for (much like thehousing maintenancesystem in game currently.) This might alleviate theresidence declaration routine. The payments would have to be on a planetary wide system,so if a player wanted to relocate to a different city on the planet, they would not have to pay more for the hanger rental.
Perhaps, If the player has not paid the hanger fees the starport would deny access to the vessel, or could deactivate (at random) a component of the spaceshipuntil the payment is made.
Enemy controlledhangers could deny hanger access or increase the rate of the fees based on -/+ faction points and current combat status. If they thinka playermay cause some immediate trouble, the starport will likely increase the fees to cover potential damage if trouble in fact arises.
Smugglers, could use their underworld skills to bypass some fees ortaking on NPCduty missions with starport personnelfor less than legal access to hanger bays.
2) Spacecraft / Housing Lots -
One of the most troublesome issues with the multi-player spacecraft is the lack of inventory space for customizing the interior of the vessels. A simple solution might be to allow players to control housing lot points by assigning lot spaces (1 lot space =100 inventoryspaces) between planetaryhousing andmulti-passenger spacecraft. For example,if I hada small planet house located on Talus that I assigned 2 lot points (which would allow me 200 inventory spaces for furniture/equipment etc...), I could then use3 lot points for for my spacecraft and have 4 lot points in reserve. This would give me 300 inventory space for decorating my spacecraft, which would make decorating a great deal easier.
Furthermore, theallocation of lot points would also carry overto the hanger bay fees at any starport. The larger the ship, the larger the rental fees. A simple solution that continues to spread the wealth throughout the game and galaxy.
3) Weapon systems -
A hopeful fix for the multi-passenger spacecraft is the addition of pilot controlled weapons systems, primarily the turret cannons. I have found that my spacecraft, as awesome and powerful (weapon-wise), is a useless piece of scrap unless I have a t least one passenger in a turret.
An improvement would be to allow a pilot to fire the turret cannons in a forward position only, if no other players are in the turrets. This would allow a single player to use the multi-passenger vessel like any other spacecraft... effectively. The pilot default forward postion would be disabled when a player is in the turret, and returns to the default when a player is out of the turret.
Secondly, but not importantly, allow the pilot to assign cannonsto the designated slots for missiles or bombs. These large spacecraft like the Decimator are supposed to be powerful vessels, bristling with weapons.Perhaps an extra capacitor slot would be appropriate for this upgrade. The Decimator has 5 million mass, even with all the components atlevel 10, my current mass use is only 500k. So it can stand a few more heavy guns to increase it's punch.
NobleKnight, you have posted a truly great idea here. Certainly, worthy of the devs at least giving it a look-over for some good practical ideas for a hopeful revamp/upgrade of JTL. Keep putting your ideas up here, maybe some dev will take a look and put in some of our ideas. Ill keep posting new ideas too.

All we really need to be able to use startships as residences is the ability to log off inside a POB ship, and log in again later still in space and still in our ship. If that works, we can live in our ships just like people can live in houses.
There actually is a way to log out and back in inside a POB. Someone else mentioned the trick somewhere, and I tested it out and had good luck with it. (This actually works inside all ships, POBs and starfighters both.)
When you're ready to log out, start a hyperspace jump to a different system. Microjumps don't work. While the jump is calculating, disconnect from the game. When you log in again, you will be aboard your ship in the target system. If you were running droid programs, they'll still be running.
