Aiming is your friend. Get experience, learn how to fight.
I don't use the targeting reticle anymore. I've learned where to aim to hit what I'm blasting at.

So you're saying you'd rather hit a button, and have the computer automatically fall in behind your opponent, and then you just shoot him in the rear?
Doesn't sound very hard / challenging / fun to me.

Instead of flaming you, I would like to give you some advice...
The targetting reticle is more of a "suggested" point in aiming. For anything slower than an AWing you should have the targetting reticle a bit behind what you're trying to hit. For AWings you need it to be ahead of your target. That should help you out a bit. Using MatchSpeed is a major no no. When in combat try keeping your speed at about 75% max and be sure to use your roll a lot more than trying to turn or go head on with the target.
Roll is your friend, practice rolling above or under the targets travel path. I believe that will give you the edge you're looking for. Space combat is actually pretty easy in this game, all you need to do is alter your current tactics a little bit.

JTL is, as SOE said from the beginning, a "twitch based game". That means you need to practice to be and stay good. Practice, and when you are preparing for a particularly hard mission, warm up. It takes time to get the brain into the mode you need to be successful, you can't just jump into it and expect to pwn like you can the ground based game.
Additionally, spend some (a LOT actually) of time tweaking your ship, to maximize your firepower. I took my Krayt out with my son on gunner the first time in a rush and nearly got blown out of the sky by tier 4's. After spending literally hours tweaking and hunting down the right components to go on my krayt, and now tier 4's get annialated (sp?) without even having to disable. Look for RE'd items, befriend a Shipwright to RE your loot, and you will get a very effective starship that will NOT be a chore to fly, but a pleasure. Even when you have reached master and aren't chasing XP.

I was wondering why the combat has to be so tedious in space. I mean i understand that SOE wanted to add an element of challenge to it but come on why aim for a tarketing reticule 60 feet im front of the ship when you can match speed and lock in behind 'em and take out thier rear deflector screens. I could see where you would want to use the lead for PvP to make it a little harder but for fighting NPC ships its rediculous to have to go through all the trouble. Its also hard for players such as myself that suffer from bad lag in space to stay locked into that target. I'll get off my soap box now but id really like an answer to this thread (preferably from a dev) but other input is good too

people who play shooter games have good hand to eye coordination, that's why they are good at shooters
people who play certain rpgs have lots of free time to obtain the skill boxes, that's why they are good at rpgs
my comp is around 1 year old, but has almost no lag in space
some people have lots of free time on their hands, some have the majic fingers
me? i'm a shooter
i likespace more than the ground game cause i'm good at it with not that much spare time ![]()

like what a few said above "this is a twitch based game". The ground game is a skill based game, where the outcome ofcombat is determined by what the caracter "rolls" based off your stats. Twitch gaming uses your personal skill to effect the outcome of the attack, these include first person shooters and flight sims for the most part.
I personaly would like the ships easier to destroy, but harder to hit.
For example: a simalar teir tie fighter should blow up with 1-2 shots and be a pain to hit.
