On the ground you just type and press enter and your message is sent. In space, you have to press enter, then type then press enter again to have your message sent.

I really like not having to use the enter key as a toggle to activate the chat interface. In the middial of a dogfight it would be really nice to just type out what you want an press enter (like on the ground game) instead of having to press enter.

The chat system is effected by lag. Sometimes you press enter twice trying to get a response and end up deactivating instead of activating the chap prompt. Needless to say, this is very frustrating. I know that there are UI options to change this behavior,
but it does not seem to effect the way chat works in spacebecause the default is a "UO" style instead of a default "SWG" style of chat.

it is set up that way because people without joysticks need the letters on the keyboard to control the action.

ROFL, I feel you pain. I guess, we have to get used to it. I've been in space for four weeks and I'm having a problem chatting on the ground now

This has been very frustrating for me and hard to get used to. I often attempt to type a message to one of my friends, only to have to close my Hyperspace Menu, Weapon Grouping Menu, Component Menu, Zone Map, etc etc etc...., and start over.
