I have a PC with 1gb ram, 1.15 ghz processor, 64 meg NVIDIA Geforce2, and a good joystick. When I first go into space, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. But when I get to dogfighting, everything gets so choppy that when I let go of the joystick, the craft still moves for up to 3 secs. I have all the detail levels turned way down, both in the game and at the options screen before the game actually starts. Can someone tell me what to do? I just added 512 ram, and it didn't make a bit of difference.

Turn off the nebula detail. That's a killer. And I hate to say it, but yer video card is a bit antiquated if its a Geforce2.

I have to agree with Rasal, but would like to add that your processor is a bit dated too. You might want to look into getting a at least a 2.0 gig processor. I myself just ordered a 3.2 processor with 2 gigs of ram box. I am putting all my current cards into that box, as they are all updated, good components.
Currently I use a 1.8 gig processor with 512mb ram and a geforce 5200 128 meg card and I run the game flawlessly with that. Although I do turn down the graphics for ground play.

I went out and bought a 128mb ATI Radeon 9200. With the ram upgrade, this did the trick. I still have detail set pretty low, but at least I can play now. WooHoo
