Thread: Public Service Announcement
Purpose: Many people have been scouring the boards for information on y-8 mining ships and using them despite the bugs.
For the purposes of making a mining ship work, here is my loadout and configuration as well as pre-mining after takeoff procedure used. (sorry the mining tactic is still in developement and will be released at a later date)
When i first started using this ship i had all the usual bugs. the capacitor doesn't discharge when you fire, the top turret is empty and doesn't work.
Another person in my guild mentioned that they had "tested" the y-8 and couldn't find fault with it. He said that he made all his equipment for the ship before even unpacking the deed. then he loaded all elite parts on the ship.
So i set out on a 3 day mission to aquire enuff space minerals to build a full set of player crafted elite parts for my y-8.
After it was loaded i had 1.5 mill mass used.
Everything was an elite part:
Y-8 Class Reactor
Engine
Armor front
Armor back
Shield
Y-8 Class Capacitor
Large Y-8 Class Mining Hold
2x Y-8 Class Mining lasers
In addition:
a v6 flight computer
a level 10 droid interface module with a 12.5 command rate
a reward tractor beam (this last one is something many people have trouble with)
What i tried:
Firstly i just loaded the ship like a cruiser. i loaded level 10 weapons and armor and the whole works from my loot bags.
Of course this didn't work. the capacitor of the ship would not go down while firing from the captains chair. Also i tried a player crafted tractor beam on the top turret and it didnt work at all. the beam failed to show a gun up there and while it would fire i had no idea which direction.
So i started crafting Elite and mining grade parts. over the course of 3 days i crafted my parts on the Y-8 itself (crafting station and resources in the end of the lower level hallway.) With 3 parts remaining (reactor, hold, and shield) to be made, i found that the ship would work but only if flying at a speed of about 590 or higher. Progress but you can't use that ship at that speed (esp if that is nearly the top speed as it was for me)
When i got all the elite and mining parts built, i still had the same problem: wouldn't work under 590ish speed. I had all the elite parts loaded.
Then i swapped the capacitor, and generator for a mining grade set (Y-8 Class) and tried again. same problem.
Now i was a little bumbed but then realized i didn't have the flight computer and droid interface installed.
I installed the droid interface and flight computer and tried again. When i got to space it still didn't work. so i started running overload programs. first i ran reactor overload, then capacitor overcharge, and finally engine overload. at this point, the ship worked normally and was a good bit (350 or so) faster than before. Tomorrow i am moving so i will post some finer grained info after most likely on friday.
Good luck to all. If you are in the Chilastra galaxy and want some help, send me an email or a tell. i would be happy to help you out and would even sell you parts to put on the ship.

I've tried all of the above except running Engine Overload, and it still won't mine. I shoot at asteroids with any mining laser I possess in the front mount and I don't get the large 'mining' hit flashes. I had heard that this was a known bug and being worked on, but it's been two publishes without a fix now...
I also note with interest that my front-mounted Elite Mining Laser doesn't actually appear to damage *anything*. Not only does it not mine from asteroids, if I get attacked by some feeble Tier 1 ships and manage to actually hit them with the front gun (loads of fun, it is, dogfighting a small figher in the Y-8) it doesn't do any damage at all.
Maybe I'll try to make an Elite engine to put in, which might push my speed above that threshold you mention... Not that it will be really usable if that does work! ![]()

As i said before, this really didn't work at all until i got those three overloads going. then it took off. Also it was slow going, with a crew of three people trying to work it out, we got 810 units mined total in 2 hours. we started really slow and probably got about 600 in the last half hour. Tomorrow night i will test to see if its really elite equipment that you need or if lesser equipment will work with the overloads. I'm glad that my ship works but its really lonely up there. Im thinking that 2-3 ships mining the same asteroid would actually make a decent output. Anyways. More on the process later.
